I just visited SUNY Binghamton a few weeks ago and I love it. To be honest it's probably the only college I'm looking forward to getting accepted into... Although, that's why I am here. I want to know what my chances are with my grades as of now, I'm a junior, and if I can, use senior year to bring up to par my grades with the suggestions given to me.

GPA: 86 (Low :/ for reason's that will be explained in my college essay ) Currently trying to get back to achieving better grades in order to bring it up to an 88 for the end of my junior year. Hopefully senior year is seen so I can bring my transcript avg up to a 90-92, depending on my teachers. I am currently taking AP Bio and AP language this year. I will be taking AP Literature and AP psychology next year. I haven't taken the AP exams yet.
SATs: 670 for reading, 710 for math. They don't look at writing so might as well leave it out.
(710 though) (Trying to raise math and critical reading to about a 1450 combined)
ACT: 29 ( Don't know if I should take another one)
Extra curriculars : JV Football, Bowling, Volleyball, Wrestling, Acapella. (Might quit bowling and head back to the football scene. Might leave volleyball, although I'm a starter, for the lacrosse team)
Clubs: Red cross, Key club, Debate team.
Other things: I have volunteer service hours about 70. I have a job at a day camp that promotes education for kids.
I will have good letters of recommendation.

Applying to SUNY Binghamton and the following:
- CUNY Baruch (The honors program as well for all the CUNY's)
- CUNY City College
- CUNY Queens College
- Drexel University
- St. John's University
- SUNY Albany
- SUNY New Paltz
- SUNY Oswego
- SUNY Stony Brook
- SUNY Old Westbury
- Syracuse University
- SUNY Buffalo
Please tell me what my chances are. Inform me on where I stand and how to get into Binghamton or any of the colleges listed.

Thank you.

You’ve got work to do.

Take the ACT and SATs as many times as you can between now and application. There is your shot to offset your GPA. Submit you best score whether SAT or ACT.

Good job on APs.

Get a leadership position in an extracurricular.

What scores would you recommend for the ACT and SATs?

Thank you and I’ll try. :)

As high as you can get. Keep taking them every time they are offered between now and application. Puking or passing out during the tests are no excuses. You are at war with the ACT and the College Board ; )

If you can get your GPA up to 92, your current standardized test scores could be good enough with your APs. But if you don’t get the GPA up, you will need stellar standardized test scores above what you have now.

With both variables unknown at this point, you have to push the battle on two fronts and hope that it all sorts itself out in your favor. Your biggest mistake would be to assume one or the other will work out and lose focus on the other front and then come up short in the end.

Also, apply Early Action to show Bing. you want to go there.

Ami I missing something? Binghamton relies heavily on SAT scores and a 1370 is above their middle 50 percent. they are starting to look at writing but your score is fine. You should add SUNY Geneseo to your list it is easier to get into than Binghamton but attracts smart and high achieving students (on a chart Binghamton looks easier because they take a lot of out of state students with lower stats and Geneseo doesn’t count all the applicants they offer January admission to).

Yeah, he is a above average on the SAT scale (75th percentile) , average on the ACT scale. As I said, he may be okay on the standards if he can boost his GPA as planned.

On the GPA scale, he is below average.

The average GPA of for freshman enrolled students for the class of 2015 was 94. Guy has an 86.

See section c11 for Bing.'s common data set GPA stats for class of 2015. Only 13% of enrolled freshman had a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 with GUY at 3.44 (86). Over 80% of enrolled freshman had a higher GPA.

<a href=“Office of Institutional Research - Office of Institutional Research | Binghamton University”>Office of Institutional Research - Office of Institutional Research | Binghamton University;

So he either has to boost his GPA or kick ass on the standards.

Fixing a GPA in senior year can be tough. You have got three years under your belt already that you can’t do anything about and you have to invest considerable time applying to colleges in your senior year.

Tough to drag the GPA down or drag it up at that point… In order for Guy here to bring it up his current GPA from 3.44 (86) to 3.58 (89.5) he will have to get a 4.0 average his senior year. Of course, all this is unweighted. Anyway, there is no guarantee he will get this done and he can’t get it done before the end of his senior year anyway. All he can do is show promise when the admissions decisions are made. And so he has to jack up those standardized tests to be on the exceptional level to offset his GPA in order to have the best chance of admission when a decision has to be made on his application.

GPA numbers are misleading for all colleges since every high school calculates differently with their own weighting system and the caliber of high school is so varied. My personal knowledge of kids who applied from my local high school was that SAT/ACT scores higher than average for Binghamton would get an applicant in. the admissions office is very short staffed compared to the amount of applications they get so there isn’t a lot of holistic determination going on.

GPA numbers in the admissions stats are all we have unless you know Guy’s school and how it is viewed and how they calculate his GPA.

Guy’s best bet is to go see his high school counselor to gauge his chances.

In fact, all of these “chance me” posts should be greeted with that advice.

Chances are roughly 50-65% for acceptance. Increasing your GPA &/or SATs will only enhance your chances.
The value of your GPA is predicated on the quality of your HS, too

Definitely take the ACT again. First time I got a 29, second time 33. Do it. Absolutely do it.

In regards to the rest, you’ll be okay as long as you apply early, I’d think. Do early action for sure. (It’s not binding, you just hear back early) You’ve got some sports under your belt and extracurricular so just write a good essay and get your app in early.
