I am a first generation college student.

The schools I am mainly looking at are Yale, Princeton, UNC, Uconn, BU/BC, RPI, Emory, North Eastern, Drexel, Penn State, Stony Brook, UPenn, and Washington University (St. Louis).

Sat has to go to 2200+ for you to get into Yale, Princeton, UNC, BC, UPenn and Wash U. you need to get at least 4’s on all your ap’s (preferably 5’s) but otherwise your looking good for all of them:) If you apply ED/EA to any of them you increase your chances significantly as your ethnicity doesn’t help much.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1338239-chance-me-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks man. I’m thinking the same exact thought. My SAT score is definitely one of my weaknesses. Hopefully those A.P. exam scores come in pretty high as well. But otherwise, things are looking pretty good?

Chances look low at Yale Princeton and upenn because, even if your sat score is higher, you seem like a typical asian/Indian applicant and without some real unique aspects. Chances are a bit higher at wash u but all 4 are still mid reaches.

Alright thanks! Is there anything specific I should be working on except SATs?

Any ideas on what I can do this summer to improve my resume? I plan to study hard for ACTs and SATs. But what other activities should I participate in?

Your activities should reflect your passions. We can’t tell you what those are. There is no “formula” for getting into these schools, and if your goal is merely to apply-to-formula, you will probably not be successful. Find some passions and pursue them. Beyond that no one can advise you on particular activities that will “improve [your] resume.”

Hey thanks! I appreciate your input. I forgot to mention I did a 10 week medical program at Yale University School of Medicine.

OK! Now you’re talkin’ Follow that passion!

Thanks man! Here’s a question if anyone can answer it. A lot of my EC’s that show passion revolve around being a doctor, but after seeing an autopsy at Yale’s medical program, I am not sure if that’s the exact direction I want to go in. I would be more happy doing research or engineering. Is that OK?

I think you have a really good chance at BU/BC, Drexel, Penn State, and Northeastern. However, like others said, Yale/UPenn/Princeton etc. will be difficult unless your SAT improves SIGNIFICANTLY. Also, although your ECs aren’t lacking in quantity, they don’t show that you’ve put a lot of time and effort into them. How have you taken any of the clubs/community service beyond the average? You seem “typical Asian” (I know, because I’m one too), so can you do something to differentiate yourself from other Asians? Something… un-Asian? Haha, not sure what that exactly means. Finally, your demographics. Being first-gen should really help you, but being Asian hurts. What about the part of US you live in, and your family’s financial assets? All of that will matter.
During the summer before senior year, it would be great to find an internship/research or something of a similarly serious caliber to show you’re ready for the “real world.” DO NOT mention that you spent a summer studying for the SAT.
It’s ok to say that your interests have changed, they know most teenagers have no clear direction in life. Besides, with all your math involvements, research or engineering are totally reasonable!
Good luck!

Hey man. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yeah I know, I plan on improving significantly, but I really need to work on critical reading. I really took the time to think about what it means to be “not asian.” I guess you’re right when you say I’m a typical asian. I’ll look into doing some research at Yale/Uconn over the summer. I live in Connecticut.

Just an update: I won the Columbia book award. I have been elected as Math Team president for the upcoming school year. I did a 10 (saturday) week medical program at Yale University School of Medicine. Over this summer, I plan on studying to raise my standardized testing scores as well as contribute more to my volunteering aspect of my resume.

Bump. Anyone?

730 on both math ii and chemistry

AP scores are in so I got a 5 in AP Macroeconomics, a 5 in Calc AB/BC both, and a 4 in Chemistry. Bump any advice?

Very impressive, but your SAT is the only thing holding you back. Apply to UNC-Chapel hill, Duke, Upenn, UVA, UCLA, Brown, and NYU. Schools around those standards are a good bet. Keep it up, and to anwser your earlier question: yes it is OK.
Chance mme? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1366605-boston-college-transfer.html</a></p>

Hey thanks. Yeah I guess I’ll just have to work really hard to give my math score a little push and boost critical reading and writing. Thank you everyone!

New SAT scores:

Math - 710
CR - 710
Writing - 770

Total: 2190!

AP Exam Results: Chemistry - 4, Macroeconomics - 5, Calculus AB/BC - 5

The final list of schools that I am applying to are University of Connecticut, Drexel University, Stony Brook University, University of the Pacific, Dartmouth University, Columbia University (Engineering), Yale University, Rice University, and UNC - Chapel Hill!
