Hi, I'll be applying for transfer admission for fall 2013 as a CA resident and I'm wondering what my chances are for UCB and UCLA if I maintain a 4.0 GPA and major in math. The problem is that I have next to nothing for ECs (but I might get a work-study job for this year), so I'm wondering how much will it affect my chances? Also, is math an impacted major? Thanks.

Also, I’ll have all of my pre-reqs for Cal done and most for UCLA, plus IGETC.

Mathematics is not impacted at either school. A 4.0 GPA pretty much guarantees you UCLA, even without EC’s. Unfortunately Berkeley admissions is always kind of unpredictable, even with a 4.0, but you would probably get in. I remember seeing stats for transfer admission to Berkeley and I think for Mathematics the average GPA was 3.74. Except for a few specific majors (mathematics isn’t one of them), Berkeley admits by college and not by major, meaning that you would be competing with other applicants to the college of letters and sciences at Berkeley and not other potential math majors. This is good news for you, because this means that you are being compared to a much bigger pool of applicants so there are many people who will look stupid when compared to your 4.0 (including me, grrrr). Also, Berkeley’s admission process employs something called a “holistic review”, meaning that GPA is one factor among several. To make your application stronger and to make Berkeley more of a guarantee, I would do A LOT of math tutoring of some sort and try to get a related internship if possible. I’m going to be applying for both schools as an Applied Math major for fall 2013 also and I’ve done tons and tons of research on this, so feel free to ask me questions if you need help! :)

I agree with ^^. You’ll be able to get into UCLA’s math program as long as you maintain that 4.0, or a gpa above last year’s acceptance stats. I highly recommend that you stock up on extracurricular activities, work experience, or leadership involvements to secure your acceptance! Doesn’t hurt. And it’ll def make you stand out and look well rounded! GL!

Thanks for all the info
I’ll try out math tutoring, hopefully that’ll count for something haha.
