What are my chances?

I want to major in philosophy at william and Mary
I have a 4.2 weighted gpa
A 1980 sat
I have taken Ap economics, Ap physics, ap us history and world history, ap human geography, ap English, ap calculus bc, as well as pre-ap classes when ap wasn't yet offered. I am president of the debate team. I started the philosophy club at my school. I go on volunteer trips every summer. I am in NHS, mu alpha theta(math honor society), and have taken advanced Spanish classes. I also ran cross country for three years and did choir, private voice and piano lessons for 6 years. In my free time I write fictional books and even had a poem of mine published. I interned one summer at a financial firm. I have gotten several awards in debate ( 1st place in Lincoln Douglas debate).

Your SAT scores stick out compared to your GPA and number of AP courses. Have you tried the ACT?
I think you have an excellent chance, especially if you are in-state. But, if you have the chance to re-take SAT or take ACT I’d urge you to do so.

Otherwise, you sound like an excellent applicant!!

I just took the june act and am waiting for my results. I got a 2200 on my PSAT so I think my sat will go up if i retake it.

Sounds like you are on the right track  Good Luck!!

Good chance, in my opinion, even without the SAT retake (though it depends on what you get on the ACT, I think), especially if you’re in state. I had an 1850 SAT and a 32 ACT, and my ECs weren’t as good as yours, and I got in. Write a killer essay, and you should have decent shot.

is getting in as an out of state student really that hard? what about being a white female?

White female is W&M’s biggest demographic (last time I checked), so it’s typically a little more competitive for them. When it comes to OOS admissions, W&M is a public school, so it’s obligated to take a higher percentage of in-state students, which makes it a little more competitive for out of state students, too.

what if you are an African American OOS female? Would that help in some way?

@conniebear17: Just like Admissions have said in numerous posts, the decision process at W&M is designed in such a way that everyone stands a chance of getting in. It is purely holistic. You are never automatically disregarded if your one or two of your credentials don’t measure up. That being said, at such a selective school, there are more competitive applicants than there are available spaces in the class… (Especially true at such a small school).
I’m also applying instate RD this year but I’ve already acknowledged the fact that admission can never fully be projected. I guess we just need to try our best and wait for things to take their course!
Good luck to you & I hope you and I both get a spot at Tribe 2017! :)
