What are my chances?

Hey everyone, I'm new here, and I'd like some feed back from you guys.

So I'm about to be a senior in high school (school starts tomorrow, the 27th) and it's application time. I'd like to know my chances for UT Austin (Cockrell), Berkeley, and Princeton.

Here are my credentials:

-I currently reside in Houston, Texas
-SAT - 2160 (630 CR, 780 Math, 750 Writing)
-SAT II - 700 Physics, 800 Math II, 800 Chemistry
-Planning to take ACT in September
-unweighted GPA 3.86 ( I have yet to figure out weighted)
- I'm in the top 5% of my class (top 20 people, I believe)

Volunteering
- Goodwill donation center, Chevron Houston Marathon, Houston Dragon Boat Regatta, local library, helped tutor middle and high school students, elementary school fun run

-Academic Excellence in 9th, 10th, and 11th

-I also got into the Youth Leadership Development Program of Houston for 2012-2013, and they had an interview for it and 40/60 applicants were chosen. You volunteer and learn about leadership and meet people such as the mayor of Houston and executives from Shell Oil and stuff.

I wish to study Chemical Engineering (my chem teacher really had an influence on this), but last year, UT Austin, for reasons unknown, just rejected so many people. It was confusing (not to mention disheartening) because 2 years ago, pretty much anyone who applied got admission to Cockrell School of Engineering. I know I will get auto-admission b/c I'm in the top 10% of my class, but I really want to get into Engineering School and not just General Studies. UT was going to be my backup until last year when it turned into one of my main focuses.

The reason that UT Austin didn’t take anybody into Cockrell was because they had taken too many applicants in 2011, and there weren’t that many spots open in 2012. Does anybody know/have more information about this and what it will be like this year? Thanks

Can anyone help me out? I would really appreciate it.

You should be fine with ChemE at UT, cant imagine you getting rejected really. (Im a ChemE in cockrell)

Idk about Berkley, its a toss up really… what race/gender are you? (If you dont mind me asking). I knew kids with 2400’s rejected and others with 2100’s accepted, and vice versa of course…

Princeton is going to be a stretch :\ I applied to Princeton for ChemE, it was my #1 school, i got rejected lol. I had a 2370, 800’s on Math two and Chemistry two internships with oil and gas companies throughout highschool, president of key club, etc… But I’m a white male from a well off family though, so it really depends… And to be honest, once you get to UT you’ll love it everyone does, UT was not really towards the top of my list but theres so many opportunities, its ridiculous, tons of jobs and internships, undergrad research oppotrunities, etc…

Anyway i wouldnt worry too much about UT, you should get in, maybe take your SAT one more time. Good luck!

Thanks amelds for you reply!

I’m an Asian-Indian and I also got a 34 on my ACT.
I just visited UT yesterday, and I really liked it. I realize Princeton is really stretching it, if not possible, but as of now, Cockrell is my number 1 choice.

What really gets me is that I’m hearing that Cockrell looks pretty much only at GPA and rank. I am ranked 18/434 with a GPA of 5.482/6.0

Like I said, for the fall 2012 admissions, only the valedictorian, salutatorian, and our number 3 were admitted into Cockrell. Starting with our number 4 (who, by the way, would have made a phenomenal engineer) were rejected from Engineering, but not UGS.
It’s really dismaying because if UT follows the same trend for this year, I won’t get in to chemE at UT, which is something I had really looked forward to ever since I settled on chemE during my sophomore year in high school.

I know I’ll get in to UGS for sure because I’m in the top 8% but I won’t go to UT unless I am accepted to Cockrell.

Thanks again for our post, and let me know if there’s anything going on at UT concerning admissions. I’d really appreciate it!
