I’m a freshman in high school, boy, african-american and my GPA is 3.22 unweighted because I don’t take any classes to weigh my GPA. I’m very well trained in vocal and dance, however i am working on perfecting my ballet skills tbecause at the CMU MT auditions you have to do a ballet and jazz combo. I just wanna know if I’m headed down the right path and if my GPA is okay for a freshman. Thanks, Ahmad.

Hi Ahmad. Folks are likely not responding to you because there’s no way that we can tell you your chances of being selected for the MT program at CMU. This forum doesn’t work like the other CC forums where you list your GPA, SAT scores, EC’s, etc. and then the “experts” can chance you. Even if you could upload a video of yourself singing, acting and dancing we probably couldn’t tell your chance! :0) People with more expertise than I have posted here that Carnegie doesn’t factor in scores/GPA at all . . . if you have a great audition your chances will increase of course . . . but it’s a very competitive program. One thing that really helped us was to read through a lot of past posts (okay, I read them all). This is a great place to start: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/477658-preparing-apply-information-h-s-juniors-seniors.html?highlight=preparing+to+apply

good post kks

In fact, some people refer to Carnegie Mellon as a “lottery school” because even if you are absolutely incredible in every way, your chances of getting in are small.

Any musical theatre program is looking for “triple threats” so you are wise to work on all three areas. You don’t mention acting, but that’s an area that thrives on proper training as well as intelligence and hard work and talent. There are more acting jobs than musical theatre jobs so you want to be ready for whatever comes along.

Summer can be a good time to study intensively. NOW is when you should be planning your 2013 summer training. Good luck!

I wouldn’t stress about the ballet too much. There was only one combination at NYC Unifieds and it was much easier than expected. This is coming from someone who hasn’t taken a ballet class in years. You’ll be fine if you’re a trained dancer.
