What are my chances?

Hi there. I'm a rising senior and I was very curious as to what my chances would be for two schools: American University and George Washington University. American University is my #1 school, and I am very seriously considering applying early decision. I love the campus and the city of Washington, DC, and I feel that the CLEG major and Leadership program are suited perfectly for me and my academic ambitions. However, I was also curious to see what my chances would be at GW, which is my #2 school. I would be applying to GW regular decision.

Here are my stats:

ACT - 30 (English - 33, Math - 29, Reading - 30, Science - 29, English/Writing Composite - 30)
(I'll be taking the ACT another time in September and I expect to score at least a little bit better)

AP's - AP European History - 3. I'll be taking AP Government this year.

As a senior my course load will be:
AP Government
Forensic Science
Journalism (English)
Phys Ed (Judo)
and PLTW Civil Engineering & Architecture

In the past, other than AP Euro, my honors/weighted courses have been:
Honors English
PLTW Design, Drawing & Production
PLTW Digital Electronics
PLTW Principles of Engineering

(PLTW is Project Lead The Way. My school offers these courses and they are weighed like an AP course.)

My school does not rank students. It's also important to note that my school is consistently ranked within the top 70 high schools in the nation.

My weighted GPA is around a 3.0, my unweighted is closer to a 2.8. I know that this hurts my chances for a good amount of schools, but I think the rigor of the courses I've taken (PLTW, AP, Honors) as well as the level the courses are taught at in my school will make up for it.

In regards to other academic information, I've taken 3 years of Foreign Language (Spanish), 4 years of Math (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calc), and this fall I will be taking my 5th year of Science (Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Forensic Science). I will also be taking my 4th year of English, History, and Phys Ed courses.

Another important thing on my transcript will be credit for 2 high school courses through the Washington School of World Studies. I did a well-known program called People to People Student Ambassadors for two summers after my freshman and sophomore years, and each year gave me one course credit. I also have college credit through George Mason University for a course in Student Leadership for a program I did called the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security.

In regards to GW, I did a pre-college program there this summer in a course called Communication & Negotiation in a Global Society. According to the professor of the course and students in the school, doing the pre-college program usually doubles someone's chance to get into the school.

EC's:

I won't post it here, but I believe my CA essay as well as my AU writing supplement are very well written and will also benefit me.

Thank you! Please also let me know if I should remove some of the EC's from my CA if you feel it's more of a list of activities than a representation of my strong extracurricular work.

Your GPA will be a major issue that APs/Honors will not rectify.
You will have to depend on your essays/recs/ECs

GW- reach
American - low reach

Yeah a 2.8 unweighted GPA is pretty low. Although your test scores & everything else is adequate. Try to get straight A’s first semester, write an amazing essay & hope for the best. Applying to American ED might help a lot if you’re sure you can go no matter the financial aid given.

GWU - reach
American - reach

Actually it might be better to apply RD because the ED applicant pool might be tougher and you would want to show the college your first semester senior year grades (assuming you do well).

American ED: high match

American values applicant’s interest HIGHLY. There’s no better way to show interest than to apply ED. Good essays are also going to help.

GW RD: low-mid reach. Better test scores could help make up for the gpa.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1546433-updated-umiami-chance-thread-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Also chance me back please

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1546065-george-washington-university-chances.html</a></p>

Are you sure? Because I’ve looked it up and it appears as though the acceptance rate at AU is better ED than RD, by around 20%.

Ravens18, I chanced you back, and teenbodybuilder I don’t think I can chance you because I know absolutely nothing about UMiami.

Thanks for your help!
