UNC-Chapel Hill has been my dream school since I was in 7th grade. I visited in February and fell even more in love with it. I'm in the process of applying to schools and now sadly questioning whether I should apply or not. I know if I don't, it's going to bother me for the rest of my life. I'm really questioning my chances.

I'm an out-of-state white female with a 23 on ACT score and a 3.75 gpa. My gpa will be higher after the semester, but I'm really worried about the ACT score. I know both are incredibly low of UNC. I have a lot of extracurriculars, (including an internship) I'm very confident with my letter of recommendation, and my essay. I'm a hopeful Journalism/Mass Communications major.

Anyone's honest thoughts would be helpful. I know it's a very competitive school. My scores are the only thing that's holding me back.

Is that GPA weighted or unweighted? A 3.75 weighted GPA is quite low for UNC.
You’re right, that ACT score is very low for UNC. Have you taken the SAT?
I am not sure how much harder it is for out-of-state students to get in to UNC, but it is a state law that 82% of students at UNC-CH be from North Carolina. It’s still worth applying, however.
(I am a senior in high school, I recently sent in my EA application to UNC-CH. I’m an NC resident, and UNC is my number one.)

Although your test scores and GPA are low for UNC (but not low in general) I think you should definitely still apply! It will definitely be harder for you to get in from out-of-state (the out-of-state acceptance rate is about 20%) but everyone I’ve spoken to (alumni, admissions counselors, current students) have all told me the same thing- Chapel Hill chooses PEOPLE, not scores. Be vibrant, fun, and make sure they know who you are as a person, and I’m sure you will have just as good a chance as anyone else! I recently applied EA, and I hope I get the chance to join the 2018 UNC-CH class with you!

Out of state acceptance is very competitive. I’m an out of stater who applied early action with a 95 average in all honors and AP’s, 34 ACT and 1450 SAT. Even with that, I think I’ll be very lucky to get in -
