Hi,
I am currently a second semester junior and was wondering if I have a good chance at UGA next year.
I will be applying regular decision this time next year. The GPA I list is the UGA GPA I will have through the 1st semester of senior year.
GPA: 3.6
SAT: 1970 (740m)(630r)(600w)
Courses: Graduating with 9 or 10 AP’s & 6 Dual enrollments (1 is public speaking so not sure if they count it)
3’s on AP gov exam and AP world exam (rest I am yet to take, however I’d imagine I’ll get 3’s 4’s maybe 5’s)
-Taking AP calc AB as a junior
-The rest of my classes have been honors
Race: Indian but born here
In State
EC: -Elected class president both sophomore & junior year
-Homecoming court sophomore year
-Founder and president of animal rights activist school club
-JV and Varsity soccer
-Intern for the City of Roswell’s government (community development, GIS software)
-Active board member of MSA (Muslim students association)
-Many volunteer hours at animal shelter
-I tutor kids in math in my neighborhood
-I have also been a lifeguard all through high school
-Have been playing electric guitar since 6th grade (in a band, and run a small business giving lessons)
It should also be known that I got a D in one of my dual enrollment classes first semester junior yr (ECON) (family problems but professor didn’t care…) :\
Given all this, where do I stand, and do you think I have a good shot at regular decision next year?
I still have time from here till then so I’m open to all thoughts\advice and criticism.
I think you have a decent shot, especially if you can really highlight your ECs.
Your GPA is a little bit below average (3.83 for UGA) and it will likely get higher with the next incoming class, but it’s not a bad GPA. Your scores are also average and fall within the middle 50% for last year’s incoming class. Your rigor is great, which is really good as it is the second thing UGA looks at.
Hopefully you can make your application really spectacular, as well as get a great teacher rec, so that the D can be compensated.
A higher SAT score can definitely make a difference. A friend of mine got a few C’s and had about a 3.65 GPA, but she got around a 2100-2200 SAT score and she got in early action to UGA.
Update: the D is actually a C on my high school transcript slightly raising my GPA as well (will be 3.68 @ end of 1st semester sr year.). Given this, and if I raise my SAT score to between 2000 & 2050, should I apply regular still, or early? And how are my chances on each?
I always advise prospective applicants to apply early unless they have rock bottom scores and GPA (which you don’t), so you should apply early and see what happens. The worst thing to happen would be a deferral in which, you then just fill out part 2 of the application.
If you can raise your SAT score, that would definitely help too.
Good thing your grade isn’t a D. Some seniors I know applying this year had one D on their transcripts and got deferred EA.
