She is un-sure about a major as of now.

Thank you SO much!

She’s a high performing student with great numbers and extracurriculars. She could certainly be a competitive applicant for selective schools and scholarships. This student and her parents need to narrow down her list of possible schools by budget and geography, then look at academic fit (STEM departments from your info.)

@Oregon2016 What schools do you think would best fit her considering she enjoys STEM? Where should she apply early?

@Oregon2016 We are clueless!

Start with in state public options. Then consider privates including the one she has already spent a summer at. If she is in touch with Cambridge area supervisors of the genetics program she should talk to them about what they recommend.

@Oregon2016 Should she take the SAT 2’s?

There aren’t many schools where ACT takers need SAT 2s. Probably not unless she wants to apply to a school that requires a Math subject test (Carnegie Mellon?). The student needs to look at the application requirements for the schools of interest.

@Oregon2016 We were thinking of applying to John Hopkins early because of their science programs and her naviance is telling us she could have a good chance. Tufts also has a strong science back round. If she does not get into John Hopkins we are add that to her list of regular schools. We really want her to get in early and just be done. John Hopkins is a very hard school to get into but she may have a chance. Is that a good plan?

@Oregon2016 We will do that for sure! We are now planning to apply early to John Hopkins. The naviance is promising and the school is strong in the sciences. If she does not get into the John Hopkins then we cross our fingers she will get into Tufts regular. Tufts also has a strong back round in science. We really want her to get in to a school early so we can be done with all of these college essays and stress! John Hopkins is a very hard school to get into so we will have to see! Do think that works? Thank you for all of your help!

My DD loved Hopkins when she toured. Hopkins really appreciates the interest expressed in Hopkins by applying early. Since Hopkins allows ED applicants to apply to all open EA schools, she should apply to another school or two EA. Good luck!

She’d have a better chance at JHU if she played lacrosse. Make sure her family can afford it! Sometimes Naviance is a great indicator. Be careful how you interpret Naviance data for her high school especially if the number of applicants historically is relatively small. Run her numbers in Parchment.

@Oregon2016 Really? I didn’t know that!

@ElleLakes Before you post on the chance threads you should figure out some schools. Without visiting or anything the best way to do this is pressing the find a college tab on college confidential itself.

Also, what I’m confused about is someone who already knows her senior year grades must already be graduated and therefore should have asked these questions quite a while ago

@RoadTriptoCollege2017 Her school has started and these are her grades so far. Sorry for the confusion. Again, I was helping a family friend when posting this thread and she seemed very eager to include the senior year grades so far. My friend is not great at the computer so she sent me all the details, I copied and pasted, and it was all under my name.

There is no experimental data that indicates playing lacrosse will increase one’s chances at JHU, or any other college for that matter. Let her do what she wants, and reflect the things she’s passionate about in the essays.

@RoadTriptoCollege2017 not very friendly.

She’s very high performing; I would look at T40 National Universities and T25ish LACs, she should have a great chance at some.
