What are MY chances

I'm a junior, and I was just wondering how I'm looking and compare with some of you guys.

GPA: UW (as of end of soph): 3.5 <- going up
W (as of end of soph): 4.7 <- going up
This years grades: Straight A's 1st quarter, 2 B's 2nd Q, Straight A's 3rd Q (Probably straight A's for final grades).

This yrs classes: AP Calc AB, AP Eng, AP USH, G/T (equiv. to other schools' honors), G/T Photo, Tech (required), Health (required semester), SAT Prep (semester)

Next Yr: AP Calc BC, AP Bio (2 periods), AP Econ, AP Eng, AP Photo, French 2/3? (I need some more foreign lang)

Rank: 50ish/385 (weighted) <- going up

SAT: 640V/720M/650W = 2010 (first try)... I should have 2100+ composite next try.

EC: NHS (inducted soph yr, Executive Board next year, potentially treasurer), SGA General Body, JCL (2 yrs), Ski Club (1 yr-it died), Boy Scouts (Life - gonna get eagle), Work Camp 2 Yrs (Helping build/Help in impoverished areas), Youth Group, Bible Camp Helper (2 yrs) then Physical Activities Coordinator (1 yr - ran it myself), Guitar, V Golf Team (3 yrs) Captain (1 yr), JV Lacrosse (2yrs), JV Wrestling (1 yr), other stuff I really cant think of atm.

Awards/Honors: 3rd in County Novice Tournament - Tournament for Fresh/Soph (Freshman year), Inducted NHS, Scholastic Art+Writing Contest - Gold Key Regional for Photography(being reviewed now for national), Breakfast of Champions honoree (school thing), other stuff I cant think of...

Ok.. as for the schools I'm most interested in: UVa (top choice.. my dad's a alumnus - 50% acceptance rate for legacies), Wake Forest, Dartmouth (grandfather is alumnus), Colgate, UNC Chapel Hill, Davidson, William and Mary, Bucknell, and the list is growing... (pretty much top 30 schools on east coast), oh yea UMD:CP too... I'm instate

Also... Projected AP and SATII scores:
AP Calc - 5
AP English - 4
AP History 3-4

Math IIC:760
History: 790

Dartmouth--reach

Dartmouth-slightreach/reach
UVA-slight reach (outofstate)
William and Mary-reach
UMD-match
UNC-slight reach/slightmach

What?
How can you call Dartmouth a slight reach for a kid with a 2010 SAT, generic ECs and a not so special class rank?

Why then is Dartmouth a slight reach and William and Mary a reach.

The schools aren't even in the same league in terms of admissions standards.

Dartmouth - big reach

Your gpa is calculated incorrectly as well. If you have a 3.5 unweighted, you can have a 4.5 weighted at best not 4.7 and there is no AP Photography class.
I'll assumed you have 4.5. Just means your school is easy since your SAT scores are very low especially considering the fact that you have taken an SAT class. That is very ugly on the transcript.

I'd hve to agree, Dartmouth not even close with present stats. Grandfather does not make you a legacy unless he gives huge bucks. Don't know the other schools well, but some real matches seem in order.

ive also wondered how much being an eagle scout has an effect on admissions?

I'm an eagle scout.

I doubt it has that much effect on admisisons at HYP. A lot of other kids have it. It shows more commitment then being a club president for one year though.

Bump, hikaru, you are quite wrong in all your points. Firstly, my weighted gpa is correct, (4 for A in academic class, 5 for honors, 6 for g/t / AP, my school is different from some others). Also, there is AP photo, it may be classified under AP 3-d or 2-d design or studio though. Also, the SAT class is a filler for health which is a mandatory half-year class, I took those SATs before I started taking the class, also what the **** do you mean by my school is "easy." You are completely wrong... we're one of the top public schools in my area.. this year we're sending 1 to dartmouth, 2 to brown, upenn, pomona, few to UVa and UNC etc... stop making unfounded critisms.

Sorry if I offended you, but you really should explain that your school has an unusual grading system and weight it as the most common way colleges weight it. 4 for regular 5 for honors/ap. If that is the case, I would still say that Dartmouth is an extreme reach. And sending only a handful of students to decent schools does not make it a "competitive public school". Regardless of your school's difficulty, your mediocre sat scores will probably keep you out of Dartmouth. As for your gpa, it is nothing special to the better colleges and your class rank is mediocre at best. I seriously suggest you apply to some less ambitious colleges. Possibly Occidental College or the lower UCs.

Weighting systems vary from district to district. It requires no explanation to the schools you are applying to you, because the actual number of your weighted GPA is totally irrelevant. Its only use is how that places you in your class ranking. The UW GPA is more important.

With all that in mind, the fact that your ranking puts you out of the top 10% of your class makes many of those schools reaches to one extent or another, even UVA with your legacy status (legacies are AT LEAST within the top 10%). UNC is fairly hard OOS, as will be schools like W&M and Dartmouth, the latter being a definite no unless you do some amazing stuff.

If you get straight As for final grades, that will probably improve your chances greatly at these schools depending on how high it makes your ranking go.

he's a legacy to UVA which means that he counts as instate so he in there
