I applied regular decision to UVA and I’m getting really nervous because I want to get in so much. Would anyone be able to tell me how likely it is I can get in with the following stats (Also I’m applying for a Comp Sci degree in the College of Arts and Sciences if that’s important):
GPA: 3.9 weighted (I know this is by far my worst stat out of all of them. I did take 6 classes in the first half of the year and got As in all of them though. Also my grades have trended up, if that means anything.)
SAT: 1460 (New)
ACT: 31
Course Load: I’ve taken 4 years of math, science, history, and English. All of this either being AP or honors. I’ve also taken all the way through French AP and a Computer Science AP course.
Extracurricular: I did theatre as a stage manager for 4 years, Scholastic Bowl Academic Team (Kind of like Jeopardy; it counted as a VHSL sport I’m the co-captain this year) for two years, VEX Robot competition club for three years (I’m the main programmer), programming club for three years, debate club for two years, and a youth council for the local town government.
Recommendations: One from my Computer Science AP teacher and another from my Academic Team coach.
Other: I’m a straight white male who’s well off so I’m not getting any minority bonus. Also I’m from Virginia and both my parents attended college but not UVA.
Essays: I’ve I’m being honest I’d say my essays were decent. I wrote a good Common App Essay and one of my UVA supplement essays was good and the other was meh.
Sorry I know this is a bit of a lame post. Thanks to anyone who’s willing to respond!! Anyone have any idea what I could do to bring up my chances. I know there probably isn’t much since I have already turned in my application. If this type of thread is like off-limits or just kind of lame I totally understand if gets reported or removed! Thanks to everyone for reading!
You look like a solid candidate to me. We will soon know if the standards have shifted, when the Early Action results come out later this month.
Your ACT sounds a little low to me.
Does your school have Naviance or similar, where you can see data on what scores and grades yielded particular results?
If your teams do well this winter, you should update them. Triple proofread whatever you send.
Good luck!
Thanks! My school does not have Naviance. Sadly it’s too late to have another go at it. Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, my team already got knocked out (the tournament might get revoked but it’s unlikely).
Did you take and put down any subject tests? If so, what were they in?
lol bro i had almost the exact same stats and extracurriculars as you when I applied last year and got waitlisted in-state. however, some people who were exactly like me got in… it’s all a matter of luck when it comes to top universities. even if you don’t get in, don’t worry about it. these chance-me posts won’t do you any good because none of us are experts.
Because you are in-state, it matters very much where “in-state” is exactly. If you are from Northern Virginia (Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Falls Church, etc.) I would be very surprise if you were accepted. UVA tends to only take the top 10-15% from NoVa, and in the counties that I am familiar with there, I don’t think 3.9 puts you close to the top quartile. If you are from elsewhere in the state, then I would say there isn’t enough information to answer.
Thanks for the info! I am from NOVA (gr). I am actually top quartile. I’m second decile but I talked to one of my administrators who told me that I was only 3 spots out of the top decile (graduating class of 300ish). However, the only thing reported to UVA was decile. I’m taking more classes than the average student (9 vs 8 5 of which are ap) and getting all a’s in them so I hope that brings it up a little. Again, thanks for the response!
Yeah I totally understand that this post really doesn’t matter. I just wanted to get a feel for what people who, while not being experts, are still more knowledgeable than me. While I really hope to get in, I think it is likely I’ll get waitlisted.
No, I was not able to arrange any SAT Subject tests. I know this hurts my application’s strength but I just couldn’t fit any in.
I should also note, about the NOVA thing, I live in a small county right outside of what is considered NOVA proper, but I’m definitely in the northern portion of Virginia.
Dude, is there any way you could update admissions with your exact class rank? If your administrator was willing to let you know you were three people off then you now know your exact rank. Maybe the person who let you know that could help you out a little and contact your regional admissions officer with this updated info? If you were that close, what do you have to lose? I’d be pulling out all the stops with this one.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask your guidance counselor to send an extra email on your behalf. I know that many of them like to hose around in their offices, but it’s their job to help you and they should want their students to get in as many of these schools as possible.
Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately, that administrator became a principal at another school. I’ll talk to my consular. I was hoping that my mid term grades, yes I was a regular decision applicant, would help with showing my grade increase. I’ll definitely talk about getting an updated class rank sent.
Good luck, dude! Hooves crossed!
