Hi! I’m applying to about ten schools this fall and was wondering if I have a decent chance at some of the more difficult schools on my list (Michigan, Tulane, RPI, maybe Northeastern). I have a 31 ACT, 3.94 GPA, and 4 APs by graduation (my school dosen’t offer a lot). I have a lot of extracuriculars: multipule swim teams, summer job, different clubs, art classes and honors programs, NHS and French NHS, and a couple of leadership positions. I know that test scores aren’t the only thing that matters and most schools practice wholistic reviews, but I’m not sure if anything stands out on my application enough to gain me admission. If anyone could give me their opinion it would be greatly appreiated!
Forgot to put I also want to major in architecture and have some art experience!
You have a shot at all of them, but they are all reaches for you, so it is debatable as to whether your “decent chance” criteria is satisfied. My strong advice is to hone in on two of them to demonstrate extreme interest. If you live in the state of Michigan that will help you make Michigan less reachy. What is your home state anyway? That might affect your ability to visit and, in the cases of Michigan and Tulane, which give preferences to in state students, will be critical.
I see on your other thread that you were already accepted to Tulane. Which school were you accepted to? Already having an acceptance to the university sounds like a positive, though I’m not sure what bearing it would have on admissions to either the BS or BArch program. Tulane School of Architecture recommends that you submit a portfolio. I assume this applies to both the BS and BArch, though you might clarify that. If they recommend, then I would assume that the portfolio is an important factor.
UMich Taubman College of Architecture has a complicated admission process for its BS Architecture. To get what they call “preferred” admission to architecture in your junior year, you need to to submit both a portfolio and the required design project. Alternately, you can apply to Taubman AND another UMich college, but I think you have to do so under EA. Applying EA to UMich sounds like a good strategy unless it conflicts with another early application.
I can’t find any specifics about application requirements for Northeastern’s BS Arch or RPI’s BArch.
You really should try your best to visit all of your top choices so that you can get direct answers to your questions about admission priorities. Barring that you should make personal contact with the department. Each college’s criteria is different, so the more specific you can get the better.
RPI has a portfolio and you have to write a few short answer essays! Nothing too difficult, the architecture program there is very underrated there in my opinion. I go there now and it’s amazing!
