What are my chances

Hi! I am currently a junior in high school. This is probably going to be a long profile so if you read it all and reply, thank you very much!

PLEASE NOTE: I am an EAST ASIAN MALE. This means affirmative action works strongly against me. Please take that into account while analyzing my profile.

Schools I’m interested in:

Cornell (Reach)
Brown (Reach)

U Michigan
NYU
William and Mary
UNC
Boston College
Boston University
U Florida
Northeastern
UVA
Case Western
Tufts
Purdue (Engineering)
UIUC (Engineering)
UT Austin (Engineering)
UMass Amherst

It’s a lot of schools, I know, and you don’t have to do them all for me, just a few per reply is fine I would really appreciate it!

Letters of Rec:
I plan to get letters from my AP Lang teacher, who loves me, and my AP US History teacher, who also loves me. I’m completely confident they will write me amazing letters. My only worry is that I will not be able to get letters from any science or math teachers because I don’t really stand out in any math or science classes. Is this a problem?

That’s all! If you’ve read this far, thank you! Again, don’t feel pressured to chance me for all the colleges I listed, just a few each will be sufficient. And also again, keep in mind that I am ASIAN so affirmative action works against me. Thanks, and have a nice day!

Couple of thoughts - For engineering, AP chem will help you more than AP bio.

I don’t know what your home state is, but the OOS publics, especially for engineering are quite competitive. While your stats are fabulous, you just never know.

IMO, many of the schools that you don’t have marked as “reaches” should considered as such if you are OOS.

You don’t say what your budget is for college. Keep in mind that for OOS students, merit money is very hard to come by.

I see lots of matches on your list but I would add 1 -2 true safeties. Hopefully your instate flagship is on this list.

I did think about AP Chem vs AP Bio, but the problem is that my chem was my worst class last year. My home state is Rhode Island, and URI is one of my safeties I have but I didn’t list it. My parents have stated that cheaper is better, but they also care very much about ranking, so they will pay as much as they can so budget shouldn’t really be a huge concern for me right now.

For the OOS ones that you think should be reaches, which ones would you think? Probably U Mich, UT, and UIUC?

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, on Mich, UT, UIUC as reaches. UNC also limits the number of OOS students to less than 18% so I would put them in the reach category as well. Purdue’s engineering acceptance rate continues to drop yearly but I think they’d still be a match for you.

I’m not as familiar with the other school’s on your list so hopefully others will chime in.

Everything is a reach for OOS except Case western and UMass.

Curious why not engineering at the other schools you have listed. Your parents paying as much as they can doesn’t cut it. You need to do an excel spreadsheet and look at OOS costs, room /board, possible merit etc etc. Michigan and Illinois are your highest listed engineering if your going by Rank.

So Illinois is like $53, 000/year and Michigan is like $65, 000. Can they pay that?
