I've participated in Model United Nations in Brazil, participated in Math and Physics olympics.
And I have very good recommendations from my school and teachers.

I wish to study economics and mathematics at NYU, Boston U, Cornell, Brown and Columbia
What do you think are my chances for being accepted??

The SAT I Writing score is low, but luckily for u colleges value this section the least. Can't say much about chances without GPA and class rank though.

yeah, you have good chances considering your cr and math scores but your writing scores might let you down. Even though those universities don't put much emphasis on writing scores, a bad score would catch their eyes.

Did you study Spanish for years, or you got a high score because it's similar to Portuguese? I'm Argentine and got 710 in Italian only studying verb conjugations and some general rules for some weeks. Too bad there's isnt' a Portuguese one, I would have scored higher for sure! Boa sorte with your application and remember to pick some safety colleges.

Thanks..
I've studied spanish for 9 years, i studied in a spanish school in Brazil... But of course it's easier for us brazilians.
And for sure I have seen colleges here in Brazil.

About my class rank and GPA..
Most schools here in Brazil don´t rank their students and doesn´t calculate GPAs... so i don´t have them. I have only my school report, that reports that i´m one of the best students in my school.
I don´t remember for sure, but I think they reported me as one of the best 3%.

do you have any national examinations or something similar that everyone has to take? Since your school doesn't follow a gpa system, your grades in such an exam would naturally carry a lot of weight.

As for the writing score, I am afraid it does catch the eye. It would be nice if you could retake it, since I am sure you would be able to raise your writing score by 100-150 points.

I know, but I'm going to Europe this January, so I can't retake the sat..
I Think I have 2 advantages, 1 is there are few applicants from Brazil. The 2 is that I'm not applying for Fin aid.
My first choice is Columbia, but I know is kind of impossible. But if I'm accepted at NYU, I would be glad.

those are ivies (columbia is ivy right?), and with the ivies, they're like shooting stars...you just never know what is going to happen. but you are a strong candidate, so try your luck. who knows, you might end up there! :)
