Please let me know...
I am so nervous. This is killing me to wait.

you're in, so stop worrying.

Yea dude, I wouldn't really worry. I'm kind of surprised you don't have an LOA. My stats are relatively similar to yours, but I have a lot more XCs and leadership positions. I got an LOA about a month and a half ago, and got my appointment a week after I got my nominatino.

Hey guys. I got my green folder today! Yes! I can't wait for R-day. Who else has appointments... let's talk. My SN is JeremyP86. HOOOOAAAAHHH

What do you think....I just got my waiver today:

I do alot of volunteer work...

My ACT score just worries me...

cadet0509

Hard to say--the things working against you are the samll class size which also may not bode well when they look at your varsity letters. Act Math is a bit low--did you take the SAT? Also, what state are you from?--that may help you. Good luck!

Didn't take the SAT b/c in the state I live in (West Virginia), none of the state schools really accept the SAT and you aren't eligible for a lot of state scholarships with the SAT. I don't think it's right that because I chose to go to a very academically challenging catholic school that I should be punished for small class size. That isn't right. I also went to IAW and got an award there...you think that matters at all?

is Dartmouth big on extra curriculars... i have outstanding extra curriculars...and my standardized test scores are pretty good right now ( most recent 2200 ) ... my gpa is a bit low tho.. a 3.4 (unweighted ) or so..i might be able to bring it up...but not by that much
what are my chances

how many people are in your whole school cadet? Shogun is right, it isn't fair you should "punished," but alot of things in the admissions cycle isn't fair. If your school is really that small, the value of your letters will be diminished, and in such a small class, your rank really doesn't give a good context with which to place your performance. I come from a very competitive area, and I was put on the NWL. I don't expect to receive and appointment, so I am just trying to be honest, I' not trying to bash you. The funny thing about it, is that in a class of 34, being fourth doesn't put you in the top ten percent, that's harsh.

cadet 0509

Let me give you my daughter's stats---not to do anything except give you an idea of what the stats were of just one person who did get an appointment to both USMA and USNA. She received her WP LOA in July 2004 (a month after IAW) and her appt about a week before xmas (that's when her senator and congressman nominations were sent in). She is not a recruited athlete.

weighted gpa 4.47
unweighted gpa 4.0
class rank 10/732
act 34 math 28 english 34 reading 29 science (31 composite)
sat 710 verbal 650 math
4 varsity letters track
3 varsity letters cross country (team cpt)
All league cross country, CIF(state) qualifier in track and cross country, etc
1 varsity letter basketball
(I will leave out school clubs, volunteer work, etc.)

Her school size is about 3200 (4 year hs)--division 1 for sports in California. It has the highest academic accreditation for western states high schools (WASC).

I agree its not fair if the decision admissions decision is based on class size but its a factor that will be unavoidable when the admissions folks have to start comparing candidates. SAT would have been good for you to take as many students who don't do as well on one can really excel on the other. Case in point, my daughter put up only a 650 on the math sat but managed a 34 on the ACT. She hit a 710 on the sat verbal but only a 28 on the act english. In California the ACT is hardly taken unless one wants to go to a school back East so you have to drive a bit further to take it. Probably the same case for the SAT where you are but it is worth taking. The academy will look at both tests. IAW is a big item in your favor. Good Luck and don't give up!

screw Dartmouth

Cadet0509:

Your ACT composite score of 29 is pretty good and converts to about a 95th percentile or about a 1300-1350 SAT . However, the relatively low math score could be a problem though since a 24 coverts to about a 75th percentile. Too late now but it would have been worth your while to take the SAT.

Wish you well.

To respond to a few messages, my school has 124 people in it total. It also has the highest accredidation by NCA.

I also wanted to add that 4 people from my school have been appointed to West Point in the past 3 years, so my small school isn't the problem. We have try outs for sports teams and the best players play, just like everyone else.

DrSnipes, thank you for being rude. I appreciate it. You know what I'm gonna do...if I get put on the NWL, I'll just take the ACT again. That's the only thing I have holding me back...or better yet, maybe they'll send me to USMAPS :)

Being Rude? I really don't mean to be rude. Honestly I wish you all the best of luck and really hope you get in. Your situation is just very different than mine that's all. My school has around 1500 students and I thought that was small!

I strongly encourage you to take the ACT again or the SAT, no matter your status. It can only help you.

If you would like me to address what you considered to be "rude" I would happily try to make amends. Was it the part about the letters? I would only expect your school would have try-outs for all athletics, I am just trying to put it into some context. For example, in my school, in order to be one of the 10-11 guys that plays varsity basketball and gets a letter, that means first making a team (in which anywhere from 35-65 can try out, which is almost half your whole school), and then getting enough stats and play time to earn a letter. My Cross Country team for example was third in the state. The team was about 30 guys, 7 of which ran varsity, and I was all district.

I am NOT trying to bash you, you must also realize that due to the regional appointment process, you may stand a very high chance. I wouldn't think West Virginia would be intensely competitive, than maybe again it is. Your state is somewhat unique in that it has such a small overall population that you have more senators that congressmen. This means that having a nomination from the whole state in your rep. AND one of your senators makes your chances that much better. for all I know, where you live many schools are smaller. Please, don't feel that I am ragging on you at all, I really don't mean to do that, I wish anyone who wants to go to West Point the best of luck, and if that means that they get a spot over me, I can accept that because I think West Point does (in many respects) knows what it's doing and has everyone's best interests at heart.

Again, I wish you the best of luck, and you will have to keep us updated as to your status!

Oh and, I realize I posted this VERY late, but unfortunately my Basketball team lost tonight in the Regional Semfinal game at JMU against RE Lee high school. It was a fun four years, and I will never forget the great times I had playing Potomac Falls Basketball. (tear)

Rude? For what its worth [exactly what you paid for it] I didn't think you were rude either. Cadet asked for an opinion, got it, and then didn't like it. People ask for opinions from people that, most likely, are not in any better position to evaluate statistics than anybody else and then they are offended. Amazing.

DrSnipes, here's hoping that you make it off the NWL.

JamTex, the thing is, internet syntax is hard to pick up. You can read something one time and it be rude to you, then read it the next day and it's not so bad. You don't get the inflection and things in people's voices. But what I think you said is very true, and I just realized it:
DrSnipes, or anyone on this board, is in no position to evaluate me and give an answer about my chances.

Thank you.
I have not been looking at CC that long and I have an appointment to USNA.
As I look through some of these threads a couple of things pop out:

You have the serial poster; the person who feels compelled to answer every posting with congratulations and/or other relatively useless comments. How could one, for example, have the time, energy, or interest to have 1,000s of posts. [I have just over 20 posts in 3 months; some appear to make that many in a day.] You can ask a question and, next thing, you know the thread is spinning off in four different directions. Oh well, as I said, it IS interesting to see all of the angst . . .

You have many responses coming from kids no older or wiser than me. [An probably in many cases, from people that even less wise than me.] How could anybody my age really know whether I have [had] a chance of getting in? How could anbody that has not sat on the appointements board [99+% of the people looking at this site] have any idea what the Board is looking for? Assuming that shogun's daughter's stats are accurately stated, at least that gives you something [not much] to compare yourself to; otherwise, asking for an opinion is like asking about your chances of getting into heaven. The only guy whose opinion counts does not appear to be posting on this site.

There are only really two truths to these threads: (1) Most responders are no better qualified to evaluate your statistics than you are; and (2) you don't know if what that person is saying is true, i.e. whether their grades are as high as claimed; whether they have been appointed [including me]; and, what agenda that person has.

This is a nerve-wracking process. Take everything you read with a grain of salt.

Amen To That!

Jamtex: You crack me up!

Good luck on your upcoming adventures.

Okay, you force me to break my no more than one post every other day rule.

I crack you up?

Next thing you know, you'll have me using an emoticon [of course, then, I would have to strangle myself for becoming a closet poster.]
