First off, since I'm new to this forum and it might help later in my post, I:
am Chinese-American
am a junior in a public high school
have been to almost all of western Europe as well as Japan and China, of course
love Cornell

So anyways, here are my stats:
SATs - Math 760, CR 670, Writing 710
GPA - about 95% weighted (if I calculate it on a 4.0 scale including pluses and minuses, eg B+ = 3.33, then it's like a 3.6-3.7 unweighted). My school does not rank, instead it does deciles. I am in the 1st decile (top 10%).
Courses - Freshmen year, I only had 1 honors course, sophomore year I had 5 honors courses, this year I have 1 honors course and 4 APs, next year I'll have 1 honors course and 4 (maybe 5) APs. I am in the most accelerated math program our school offers, and next year I will be taking triple maths and quadruple sciences, a lot of which will be independent study.
Extracurriculars - This is the area I'm most worried about. I've played piano since 3rd grade, I was in orchestra from 4th to 10th grade, NHS(11th-12th), JETS(11th), Physics Olympics (11th), had an essay published in Creative Communication (10th), Volunteer work as a teacher's assistant (11th, 25+ hours).
I plan on applying to Cornell's College of Engineering early decision.

I know my SATs are just average for engineering, I think my GPA is somewhat low, and my extracurriculars are weak. I'm going to spend the summer writing my application essay, and I do have a variety of interesting topics to talk about given all the places I've been to. So what do you think my chances are?

if you are a girl... then you have a great shot... it's almost a sure in

if you are a guy... then you have a good shot... just try to retake the sat in october and try to boost your c.r. score at least the 40 points to a 700

i know that its engineering and they dont put that much emphasis on cr, but then again three 700's look great... i dont wanna say it's a def. b/c if admissions selectivity increases next year, almost any one is a toss up.

Engineering Admissions get more and more selective every year. Try to get some sort of major leadership position, they really look at that here at Cornell. Also, if you're a girl, you're doing great.

Thanks for all the support (I am a guy btw). I've been really stressed over this lately because of the caliber of the competition I have to face; it's rather reassuring to know people think I actually have a decent chance in getting into there.

Posted this on another new thread as welll...

So here's the deal, my GPA is real low, but then again I am graduating frmo a top 10 Engineering school with a degree in Electrical Engineering
I plan to do my Masters in Engineering (with concentration in Financial Engineering) so basically it is Masters in Financial Engineering.

GPA:3.0 (Electrical Engineering, minor in Economics)

GRE: Quant 800/Verbal 700

Interned at Proctor and Gamble, Researched at the 2nd Best University in Europe after Cambridge in field of High Voltage technology.

Extra Curriculars: Student Union Board Director of Marketing, Student Government Executive Director of government affairs, Secretary of one of the biggest Students association at my school and a few other strong ones.

Can you guys please rate me, I was told by one person on the admissions board that I have a pretty good chance to get into this program.

Hi Th3rmal,
I think u have a fair chance of getting in. Ur SAT scores are quite good, and ur GPA is fine. I would just work on ur ECs...maybe a little more leadership...
All the best!
