What are my chances?

Hey guys, tell me what you think. I'll be applying for the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences.

White Male, Instate

GPA: 4.3, 3/255. My school counts HS classes taken in middle school, and my 7th and 8th grade math teacher decided to give me the highest B+ possible. Rest are all A’s.

Senior Classes:

Gov School Molecular Biology

Gov School English 112

Gov School Physics (I wish I could have taken it before, but scheduling wouldn’t budge)

Gov School Calculus (Ditto physics)

Gov School Research Symposium (Culmination of a 2-year research project)

Fundamentals of Music Theory FINA211 at a local college

D.E. Government

Two more classes at the local college, probably Comp Sci I and either an advanced chem or calc II

Governor’s School is a separate entity from my parent school where I take half my classes. All classes are college credit. DE is dual enrollment, also college credit. My school does not offer ANY AP classes whatsoever.

SATs: CW-760, CR-750, M-670
I’m going to attempt to raise math significantly, which I believe is doable.

SATIIs: Taking in November, expect 780-800 in Chem, 700-750 in US Hist. I’m studying for MathII, but honestly have no idea how I'll do on it...

Extracurricular Activities:

9/10/11/12 School Soccer Varsity

11/12 Recreational League Soccer

9/10/11 Karate (1st Degree Black Belt)

9/10 Latin Club (Secretary… lol)

10/11/12 ACE (Quiz Bowl Competition) Junior Year 1st Team All-Districts, anticipate Senior year as well.
11 Battle of the Brains (same as ACE, but this time we were on TV!)

9/10/11/12 Piano (6 year national Guild honor roll)

10/11/12 Guitar

10/11/12 Jazz Band 1st Chair Alto Sax

10 Marching Band

10 Concert Band 1st Chair Alto Sax

10/11/12 District Council of Youth Ministries (coordinates youth retreats, mission camps, etc.) (2-time Communications Chair [Vice President], Music Chair)

10/11/12 Worship Team

Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout)

11/12 NHS

I go to a rural public school.

Thanks,
Tadd

You shouldn't have a problem, in my opinion. Work diligently on your essays. Show the university your real interest in their school. good luck!!!

I agree, you are in, but follow Momray's advice and keep up the good work

Hey I will be applying in-state to UVA too and from what I've read/heard about the admissions office I think you'll be in, for sure. You have a good rank, good SAT, and a rigorous class load! Work hard on your essays (which I'm sure you will!) and good luck!

Thanks for the optimism, guy!
One last question for ya... under the assumption I got in, what are my chances of being selected as a Rodnam Scholar (e-school quivalent of Echols)? I know I need to raise my math, but what else do they look for?

I would say on a scale from 1-Gary Busey you've got about a Steve Urkel

Anyone want to translate the above poster’s response for me?

By the way, ehiunno, thank you for kindly correcting my spelling of “Rodman” while quoting me. I was in a bit of a rush. ;-)

Tadd

I'll translate: no one knows. The admits to those programs are so seemingly arbitrary. Judging by what you have here I would say slim. Your SAT math is going to hurt you and you really dont have any exciting, interesting or unique EC's. I think they base it heavily on your essays, so if you write good essays then maybe. I made a number of VERY long posts regarding how i believe tht UVa decides the Rodman/Echols scholars and how I feel you can maximize your chances in the UVA c/o 2011 forum. I dont remember which thread but it should be easy to follow. As always, i may be way off base and YMMV

Thank you for your candor, ehiunno. I agree that my math score is lacking, and I'm working to improve that. I can see what you're saying about my ECs. I mean, I'm quite proud of some of them; Eagle Scout, for example, took a lot of work. But I'm certainly not the only Eagle Scout who has ever applied...

Kudos to your responses in the "Scholars" thread in the c/o 2011 forum, they were very informative.

By the way, how did you get internships at NASA and JLab? That sounds pretty interesting. I never knew such opportunities even existed until I started seeing things like that on CCer’s resumes.
Probably why my ECs lack bells and whistles.

Thanks,
Tadd
