Alumni: Brother graduates in 2008 with honors

Graduate from Newsweek's #23 High School in the nation

What’s your class rank? I’m curious because of your high school’s rank.

I feel it can go either way and your SAT scores could be what kills you if you get rejected. However, because English is your 2nd language if that was made clear in the application they may forgive your english scores. It’s clear that you’re still challenging yourself in English with AP Lit.

dvm, is the bf gpa the UF gpa? cause my BF gpa is much lower than when i calculated it myself, its like .3 higher…weird

Bright futures is a little different. They only take a certain amount of credits from each subject to determine your GPA. You are allowed three extra credits after that from any subject, including fine arts, to raise the GPA. The UF GPA takes all of your academic classes but no fine arts or “academic electives.”

Help me out here with what gets counted and what doesn’t for the UF GPA:

Say a student has already taken Bio, Chem, Physics, Physical Science, so he’s really done with all 4 years. Senior year, he takes Ecology or Astronomy. Does it not count because it’s ‘over and above’ his basic requirements?

Say a student takes AP Lit and Creative Writing in the same year. Creative Writing is an elective. Does it count?

Say a student takes all the maths through Calculus, yet also takes Financial Math alongside. Count?

Say a student takes US/World/Euro history all four years of hs, yet also takes a miliary history elective class. Count?

Does AP Music Theory or AP Art Portfolio count?

I don’t think Ecology or Astronomy count. Everything else I know for sure doesn’t count, including AP Music Theory or AP Art Portfolio. That doesn’t mean though they won’t look at the grade. They just won’t factor it into the GPA.

dvm, do you know of any documentation that spells this out for UF applicants? Is there a webpage that explains this? This has been a peeve of mine with our high school for years. They do not explain the whole GPA recalculation and students have been shocked and dismayed when they don’t get into UF and they thought all along their GPA was a lot higher than it really is. I know kids who think they’re carrying a 4.0 weighted, when really they have something like a 3.5 when all the electives are taken out. Students should be aware of what counts or doesn’t count so they can plan accordingly.

http://cyberguidance.net/college/recalgpa.pdf

I believe they use this. They definately use only core courses, and not electives, and not even required nonacademic courses like PE, Health, etc. With someone who takes 6 full on academic math courses (alg I, geometry, algegra II, precalc AP Calc AB, AP Stats or 6 full on academic science courses (biology, chem physics AP bio, AP chem, AP physics), I suspect they could use them all, or take the first 4, or the best 4. That is where there is confusion. But electives that are not core courses do not count towards the U’s recalculated GPA in the state of Florida, AP/honors or not.

[Ask UF - How will UF compute my high school GPA?](http://www.questions.ufl.edu/admissions/freshman/15/)

But that still doesn’t explain this- what if a student take more than one course in a subject during the year? Does one really not count? I know a kid who took APUSH and APEcon in the same year.

Some students JUST take Ecology as their primary science (say, in their senior year). Others take Physics, and ecology as an elective. See what my confusion is?

My school runs on a semester system, so we don’t have block scheduling. I have a B in the first semester of English III last year and an A the next semester. Which grade gets counted into the GPA? This is getting much more confusing than I thought. If only the highest grade out of both semesters gets counted, my UF GPA may be much higher than I thought! Yay!

both semesters are counted…

Yes, our school gives two semester grades for every course, not one final grade. Both semesters are counted. The formula gives each grade a half credit (ie the end result is that they are averaged), with the usual boost from honors/AP/DE.

haha Mike Vu!

For your wallets sake, I hope you don’t get in :-)

I say 65% acceptance.

This is where I hate the system where there is no difference between a B- and a B+. My school makes that distinction in its GPA, and I think it’s important. If someone gets an 89 one semester and a 92 the other, they’ll get an 85 average when they apply to UF. See how screwy this is?
