What are my chances?

I know there are probably a ton of posts like these on here but I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on my chances of gettting into FSU next year (09). I'm a junior right now and plan to apply right away and for summer term C as well. The part about admissions to that term being "easier" is a small part of that decision, because I mainly want to just get a head start on the rest of my Freshman brethren if I get accepted.

Anyways, here are the credentials....

3.4 unweighted, 3.8 weighted GPA- I haven't taken a single non honors class in my HS career with about 1 non academic (mandatory PE stuff) class a year.

1180/1600 SAT on my first try with no studying. I take it again June 7th (I think) and I plan on actually studying this time in hopes of reaching the mid 1200 or hopefully 1270 mark for bright futures.

Passed the AP World History exam and have 3 coming up in the next few weeks with, AP Lang and Comp., AP Govt., AP US History.

EC's: Varsity Football, Varsity Track, JV bball, for a few years (not sure if this matters since it's not varsity), Surf Team, Student Government, Mu Alpha Theta and Beta Club

Random stuff: I've been nominated for numerous academic summer courses but just have never had the funding to attend any of them. Have about 100+ Hours of community service.

Any opinions would be appreciated. After my visit up there this past weekend ,when I attended FSU vs. Miami in baseball, I've becoming intent on becoming a Nole. So much so, that I've even considered the TCC route if things don't work out, but they BETTER!

Thanks guys.

first off, welcome to the fsu board. you have a very impressive profile and i think your chances are good. if you are able to raise your sat scores into the mid 1200's and you apply early (like you said you intend to do), I believe you will have a good shot of gaining admission. I would say you currently are around a 45-55% chance. however if you raise your SAT into the mid 1200's and apply early, I think your chances move up into the 65-70% range.

In previous years, you would have a much greater chance of getting in, however it has gotten very difficult these past few years. as a parent of a student from oos that had similar stats to you, we feel lucky that he was able to get in this year.

anyway... good luck. it is a very exciting time and I hope to welcome you to "The Tribe" family soon. As always, you should never rely solely on any advice you get on these boards. it is always recommended that you speak directly with the admissions department at FSU and pose the same question to them. they are by far much better qualified then I to give you a good read on your situation.

Are you instate or out of state? I think you have a good start on things. Definately prep for the next SAT. Taking it cold with a 1180 is a good start. Retake June, and if needed you still have plenty of time to take in Oct if needed.

I would work on essays and your resume over the summer, and THE DAY the application goes live, start working on it. Get in submitted by Sept 1st, and as soom as you are back in the fall have your transcript sent, have a GC rec sent, and have a few rec letters from teachers sent. They are not required but they are accepted and read. Get everything done BEFORE the first deadline. Admissions staff have more time early in the cycle, and they do read and review before the deadline.

I will look for the link, but figure out your FSU GPA to see where you stand also. It includes only your academic subjects.

Finally, try to get in some leadership experience via your sports or clubs. If you have time on your hands and no leadership positions, consider getting a job to show you can handle work and school etc. What are you doing this summer? A summer job, with a rec from the boss come fall can be good.

Make sure you apply for the FIRST deadline and you'll most likely get in. I don't see how you wouldn't.

I think you'll be fine :) Perhaps try retaking your SAT for a higher score or take the ACT. Also, make sure you apply EARLY.. the first day applications open up preferrably. You'll most likely get in.. good luck!

I'd say you have a strong chance of getting in. If you get that 1270, I personally think you can expect an acceptance, especially if you are instate. But of course, I am not proper authority to speak on this; just my opinion. Good luck! Keep up the good work. :)

Just so everyone knows, I'm in state. I live over on the east coast smack dab in the middle of Jacksonville and Miami on the beaches.

Sunny Florida, those stats I gave regarding gpa (3.4/3.8) were calculated using the method that colleges use where only core classes are counted. Thankfully, my guidance counselor informed me of this a few weeks ago as I had no idea before.

One quick question though. Do you guys think that unweighted gpa holds any value at all, or do they simply base you off of weighted? This is something I've often wondered but never figured out.

Thanks guys.

Instate--I think you have an excellent chance.

Here is the way to calculate your exact FSU GPA: http://cyberguidance.net/college/recalgpa.pdf. I believe that FSU looks only at your calcuated FSU GPA. The admissions office last year received over 30,000 applications. So they condense the info and look at what I would guess to be only a summary: the FSU GPA, the superscored SAT/ACT, your resume and your essay. They may make comments on any letters or supplementary material they receive.

They superscore the SAT, so you have nothing to loose by retaking. They will look at the best Math, the best CR etc of all takes.

Good luck. My daughter was like you, one visit and she was hooked. She applied early, got in, and never looked back or even completed round two of the applications elsewhere. She is also very glad she applied for summer. Not only did she get in on the first go-round rather than be deferred, she really cannot wait to start. Between UF and FSU, many of her friends are starting summer. And a few starting in fall have expressed a strong wish that they were starting in June and not August!

D also hopes to spend a summer or semester abroad, and summer now gives her flexability later in her major.

PS, we are on the Treasure Coast--are you north of us?

Sunnyflorida, I recalculated my gpa using that link and it came out to be a 3.733,repeating. Also, I live up in Satellite Beach and go to Satellite High, right below Cocoa Beach and across the river from Melbourne.

Hey goot, we actually live right nearby each other! I live in melbourne and would have been districted for Viera High. I've got a few friends in your area though.
If you're able to pull your SATs up to the mid 1200s (should be fairly easy considering your cold score) I'd agree you have a great chance for the first round of admissions come next year.
