Hey guys,

I was just wondering what my chances would be of getting into Case Western Reserve. I'm an entering Senior this year.

Here what i have so far:

GPA: 3.1 w (i know its not so great, but only one aspect) It might also be up to 3.4w (it's a weird situation about transferring.)
SAT: 1860; 700 Math, 590 Writing, 570 Reading
ACT: 28
by the way, i will be retaking both of those very soon

Next Year I'll be taking
AP Comp Sci
AP Stats

I've already taken (didn't do so well though)
AP World History - 1
AP United States History - 2
AP Physics B - 3

Varsity Tennis for 2 Years
Track and Field for 2 Years
Cross Country for 1 year

Community Service: I also have been serving at my church every other week since February.

In about 3 clubs. I'm also planning on creating one this coming year.

Ethnicity: African American

So what do you think?

I'll bet you have a decent shot of getting in; your chances for a merit scholarship are a bit dicier. Hate to say it (affirmative action based on race/gender instead of socio-economic status leaves a bad taste in my mouth) but your URM status might be the difference between acceptance and waitlist/denial.

Your ACT is fairly strong; your SAT scores could use some work. :) Also, make sure to get excellent grades this fall. I'd hide your AP scores from admissions unless they specifically ask.

Good luck with your application! :)

Thank you very much! Even if I were to score a 30? on the ACT, would that help for the merit scholarship?

Breaking 30 would certainly help. And apply early!!! Definitely get your app in by November 1st.

also, how is case overall? (campus, social life, safety, etc.)

For my take on social life/academics, i'll direct you to my post in one of the other threads "Case social life and academics."

As far as campus life goes, i personally think there is plenty going on for you to occupy yourself. There are tons of clubs, including sports, and those with non-athletic focuses (I'm sure there's a list of them all somewhere on Case's website). I'm not sure whether you're familiar with the area, but Case is located in University Circle, which has a number of cool attractions. There are several museums around here like the natural history, art, automobile, botanical gardens. A bit further, but still easily accessible are the rock and roll hall of fame, and the great lakes science center. Best of all, Case students can get into most of these places very cheap, or even free. Also, if you're into music, the Cleveland orchestra plays right in the center of campus.

Safety is an important issue at Case, and its discussed pretty often because of the school's location in east cleveland. The fact is, people have been mugged on campus before. Still, its pretty easy to avoid the situation, simply by not walking alone late at night. Basically, take the same precautions you would take in any city.

hope that helps
