what are my chances

gpa: 3.59 (44 credits)
major: chemistry
minor: spanish
future goals: medicine
extracurriculars: volunteering in the hospital (30 hrs so far), doing research since my freshman year

im a sophomore in a state school and will apply for my junior year. i did horrible on my SAT's so i will send my ACT score (23 - which is also bad, but i think its better than my SAT scores).my high school average was around 88.

chances for:
johns hopkins, columbia, nyu, ga tech, emory, college of NJ

thanks

most of thoose schools it looks like are way out of reach for you

terrible sat’s, poor hs record, underwhelming ec’s and a mediocre college record at a state school…columbia, john hopkins, nyu, (cas?) and emory will be out of reach for you

college of nj and ga tech you’ll have a shot at

dufflebagjesus,
dont mean to call you out or anything but you seem to put down everyone who has less than a 3.8 and say they have no choice. just wondering why you seem to think that. did you get rejected to your schools with a 3.79 or something…a 3.6 is a great GPA, who are you to say that everyone will not get in.

LOL was thinking the same thing… would hate to have that MEDIOCRE 3.6 gpa

I seem to agree with both dufflebag and xfer

guys… dufflebag gives realistic chances. as of now, jhu and columbia are out of reach for the op.

Sure, cause Columbia has a 3% acceptance rate, but it doesn’t mean that anybody with less than a 3.8 has no shot at transferring to an Ivy. I was just reading up on this today - if you look through most Ivy acceptance stats, there are plenty 3.5-3.8 students. The essay counts for a lot, as do the recs and the ECs.

Now, I agree - unless the OP has a fantastic hook or ECs/essay, Columbia is a crapshoot. Still, he wouldn’t have been much better off if he had a 3.8/2100 SATs in HS.

exactly. but thats why chances threads are ridiculous anyways.

i guess i’ll just apply and see what happens…

he did not post on here (or at least he should not have) to be told what a great shot he had at all those schools…he posted because he wanted an honest assessment of his chances

xfer-

no, nice try but i was accepted to the school i applied to with about that gpa

a 3.59 would otherwise be a fine gpa, but if you are serious about applying to columbia/jhu, it just won’t cut it. these arent schools ranked 50-100, these are top schools who reject students with 4.0’s routinely

yes, people do (rarely) get accepted to ivies with a 3.5-3.8 college gpa…that fact alone does not exclude ergin from being a competitive applicant, but that fact coupled with underwhelming ec’s, hs grades and what he called “terrible sat’s (i’m assuming around a 1000 or worse if theyre worse than your act’s)” is going to make his chances of getting into either one of those schools just about 0…the people you read who get into columbia with a 3.5-3.8 are otherwise worldbeaters who have a laundry list of incredible ec’s and a track record of performing well (or perhaps have parents who are major donors)…xfer, go ahead and see how many people with OP’s college gpa, hs gpa, sat’s and ec’s transferred into columbia the past couple of years, then i’ll kindly ask you to step off

Don’t listen to some of these people. You have a shot at Emory, Georgia Tech, TCNJ and NYU. I know people who transferred to NYU and Emory and WashU with 3.5+ GPA. Your SATs and Hs record is not really important for transfer, because colleges don’t really care how you performed, they just want to see how you’ve managed during the semesters you’ve been in college so far.

Personally, I can see an acceptance at Emory for you.

all right thanks
