What are my chances?

my second SATs came in.
my math dropped to 700, CR went up to 740 and writing up to 770
my superscore is: 1490/2260 (best sitting score: 1480/2210)

will that help?

Hey augustagurrl,

I think you are qualified to attend any of these schools to which you aspire. Your SAT scores are on track with those of other strong applicants. Your GPA is excellent as well. I think that the other people who have responded to your question have inflated the importance of extracurriculars. They can’t be proven, so they don’t matter as much as many people might think. You’re love for science and engineering can be proven in other ways, such as your performance in your science courses, and in your essay. Focus on getting a stellar recommendation letter, particularly from a science teacher who knows you well, and let your passion for the sciences shine through in your essay. Admissions to these kinds of schools are really a crapshoot. Work hard over the summer on your essays, because that is the most important part of your application. You already have great credentials, you just need to stand out with your “voice” in your essay. I wish you the best of luck, and I know you will be admitted to some excellent schools.

Yes, it’s help, since most schools look at the superscore.

I’d suggest visiting [College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics). A quick browse of the statistics at your chosen schools doesn’t paint a very optimistic picture. The “easiest” Ivy on your list is Penn with an 18% acceptance rate for females. CalTech has a 29% acceptance rate for females but your math scores are very close to the 25th percentile of admitted students.

The best match school on your list is JHU. Throw in the legacy, good recommendations and essays and I think that should work out for you.

You have a strong resume but you’ve chosen some of the most competitive schools possible. If you had a 7.0 GPA and 12,000 on your SATs places like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth and Caltech are still little more than lottery tickets. I’d pick one or two from that group and apply to the rest on your list (including UF and Rollins) and hope for the best.

Good Luck.

All those schools are so hard to get into. Right now, besides Emory and maybe Hopkins they seem like reaches… maybe start looking at a few matches or safeties? I think being a legacy at Hopkins would definitely help you. It seems like you definitely need to play up your interests in math and science. Also, I would recommend applying to Cornell; the engineering program is often #1 in the country and they have higher admit rates especially for girls in science.

woww very nice EC’s. SAT’s are pretty solid. only piece of advice would be try to compete/start/do something really epic, and not just laundry list your EC’s. im sure youve done something amazing that you forgot to mention!
and u already chanced me hahahaha <3

see i really haven’t.
i co-founded a local charity, but that has nothing to do with what i want to study.

would it be worth writing my essay about how i’m building the foundation of my school, and even if we haven’t done anything like competitions now, we are forming options and chances for kids 10 years from now?

You should have a pretty good shot at WashU, Hopkins, Emory, but it is hard to say about the other schools because they are such a crapshoot.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735431-chances-washu-cornell-penn.html

Well I updated it, so hopefully I can focus on a few specific ECs and whatnot…

Gender: F
GPA: 4.35 W/4.0 U
School: Private catholic school; 3rd graduating class
Rank: out of 55 kids…i think i’m #1 but my counselor can’t tell me. i’m definitely in the top three though.
SAT: best sitting score- 1460/2110
superscore- 1490/2260
ACT: 32 (35 E, 33 M, 34 R)
Extracurriculars:
Mu Alpha Theta
elected president as a junior; my goal right now is to start getting students interested in attending competitions and whatnot. hopefully this year that will actually happen.
Student Council
i’ve been VP of my class all 4 years; just elected VP of student council as a whole, which makes me really excited. once again, this will hopefully be our first year of going to competitions
Varsity Tennis
i’ve been on the Varsity team for the last 2 years (JV as a 9th grader)
we placed 2nd at districts this year. i’ll be playing again next year.
Thespian Society/Drama Club
i’ve been in both Fall plays put on by my school, both leading roles

Volunteering
Friendly Flowers: its the name of a local charity I co-founded; we handcraft and deliver hospital arrangements to lonely hospital patients once a month; we are completely funded by private donations.
March of Dimes/Relay for Life: basic, once a year participation

Work Experience
salesperson at a jewelry store (they also had me model in their televised ad)
clerk/secretary of my dad’s neurosurgical practice

Other
I was a Division Winner for the West Point Bridge Contest
First Honor Roll all 6 semesters so far
Most Outstanding Student in 14 of my 19 possible classes
3 online courses (currently: chemistry)- because I took two maths my freshman year and it threw off my schedule
Taught myself French III through independent study through the University of Nebraska

I’m applying to a lot of schools
princeton, dartmouth, johns hopkins (top pick right now), emory, washington university in st. louis, upenn, caltech, mit, harvard, yale, UF, Rollins College, Santa Clara University

I’m a girl who wants to study environmental or electrical engineering. Hopefully I could do a 3-2 program or minor in Creative Writing (which seems kind of random, but its what I want to do)

anyone want to help me with my chances? thanks so much

oh, and i know the Ivies and caltech, mit, etc. are a crapshoot. i just want to know if anyone has any recommendations for me.
and i’m trying to work with my math teacher’s husband at an environmental engineering company…i’ll see how that works out.

and I just got my AP scores for this year:
AP Calc AB: 4
AP English Language: 4
AP US History: 5

Here’s a suggestion. Since your school is new and you want to be more involved in engineering, why not MAKE a club? Granted, I don’t know your school protocols and such, but taking the initiative, as you did by taking your own charity, shows admissions that you are passionate about this and willing to lead the pack.

Otherwise, your SATs are solid, but you haven’t revealed your science ACT subscore or your SAT subject tests. Do you mind telling us?

princeton-High reach for anyone
dartmouth-Mid Reach
johns hopkins-Low Reach
emory-Low Reach
washington university in st. louis-?
upenn-Mid to High Reach
caltech-hmmm…
mit-High Reach (as far as I know, MIT has a bit of a skewed admissions system)
harvard-High Reach for anyone
yale-High Reach for anyone
f.w. olin college of engineering- I don’t know

unfortunately i got a 27 on the science section. it was the night after prom (i didn’t get home til past 2) and it sucked. i didn’t even do the last eight problems :(

i got a 730 on my Math Level I SAT II but thats the only one I’ve been in town to take.
in october, i’m taking Math Level II, Chemistry (I’m taking the online course right now), and either English Literature or I’ll try to pull up my math level I score.

sorry i left those off.

i’m officially an AP scholar with distinction.
2nd in my school.
i’m so happy :)

i think you have a good chance at those schools. of course it wont be easy, but it wont be for anyone else. you show leadership and have good grades. improve your sats and you will have an even better chance. i got a 32 on my act too! and i was considering environmental engineering before. not anymore though :)

I can definitely see you getting into a few of those schools. You will get into Hopkins. As for HYPM, that’s a totally different story. You’re going to want to get your SAT up for these schools. Your rank and GPA are awesome, obviously. They’re actually perfect!!! Your ECs are good as well, but they are not outstanding. I like your essay topic too!1

WHOOOAA i wrote my SATs wrong on page 2
my best sitting score was a 1480/2190
my superscore was 1490/2260
sorry :)

but thanks for the input
yeahhh i would LOVE to be into hopkins
i mean dont get me wrong i would go to princeton in a heartbeat (possibly less) but i think at this point, realistically i’m going to hopkins if i get in

please chance me.
i will chance back!!

will it help if im a national merit semifinalist?
i mean i know the ivies dont offer scholarships for it, but it will still look good, right?

Yes, it definitely would look good if you’re a national merit semifinalist. I’m pretty sure you’ll get into Hopkins but a lot of the other ivies are a reach for anyone. Good luck!

any other tips??? i’ve switched around my backups. now is rollins, UF, and colorado school of mines.
so my list of schools is 14. yes, i know its excessive. however, for my parents to pay for the schools i WANT to go to, i have to apply to schools they want ME to go to (even though i will probably be rejected from most, if not all of them).
so i’m applying to:
REACHES
-MIT (parents’ choice)
-Caltech (my choice)
-Stanford (pc)
-Princeton (mc)
-Dartmouth (mc)
-Yale (pc)
-Harvard (pc)
-Cornell (pc)

Matches/Low Reaches:
-Hopkins (mc)
-Wash U (mc)
-Emory (mc)

Backups:
-UF (pc)
-Rollins (mc)
-CO School of Mines (mc)

UGH. any advice for anything with these schools? tips for applications, whatever?? i could definitely 100% use it.
