What are my chances?

Hello,

I'm a 16 female year old Michigan student preparing to enter my Senior year of High School. I'm questioning my chances at the University of Michigan..

My current GPA is a 3.86.. and has vastly improved from my Freshman year. Although my GPA is fairly high, I scored a 24 on ACT (but am looking to improve my score this coming fall, as I am re-taking it). I enrolled in the most challenging courses my school offers my junior year, and will be taking the most challenging classes senior year as well. By the time I finish High School, I will have taken the only 3 AP courses offered by my school, and would have taken 4 - however my school cut the class. I'm planning on doing an Independent Physics course, due to the fact that my schedule was tight, if took the normal Physics course, I would not have the opportunity to take AP English.. I'm trying to work with the Physics teacher in order to allow me to be prepared to possibly take the AP exam for physics..

I'm a member of NHS, and have been envolved in several community projects, including a community project this past weekend to help build a playscape in one of our local parks. I was a part of our Quiz Bowl team when it was offered at my school.

I'm also a volunteer ref for our local AYSO - in addition, i'm a volunteer assistant coach for my younger sister's team.

I lettered in Boys Varsity Soccer team my freshman, sophomore, and junior year (as Girls Soccer was not offered).. however, for the love of the sport, and the hope to allow other girls the opportunity to play soccer, I began a Girls team for this spring and captained this team. It took a lot of hard work and effort to do, as I was faced with several challenges along the way.

I also lettered in Varsity Track my freshman year.

What are my chances?

You have a good GPA, strong ECs and a tough workload. But your ACT will hurt you. Anything under a 25 is generally reserved for URMs and super-athletes. Practice hard for your ACT and also look into the SAT. You may be better at taking the SAT. You really should aim for at least a 28 on the ACT and at least a 2000 on your SAT if you want a good chance of getting in. You can still get in with lower scores, but you would be tempting fate. Especially that next year, Michigan is expected to accept one of its smaller classes in years and given recent trends, Michigan is going to experience a record high number of applicants and a record high yield rate.

Being in-state will help you, so just keep up what you've been doing and boost your SAT/ACT scores some.

How about me?
I am currently a junior in a Michigan high school and i am going to be a senior in this comming fall. so i was wondering what are are chances that i will get in?

My current GPA is 3.7
AP classes: Ap U.S history, A.P Biology, A.P English and A.P Psuchology
Clubs: Student Council- vice president of the class
NHS member
More than 50 hrs of community service
Work almost every day after school
SAT: 990 (i know that is very bad)
i plan to take ACT this coming fall, which is my first time

Please look at my report and see what are the chances that i will get into U of M
thank you very much!

Ok that SAT score makes absolutely no sense in the context of your courseload and GPA. Did you like pass out during the test or did they score it wrong or what? I'm sorry but i dont realistically see anybody getting into the university with that SAT score.

febrabbit, your SAT score is more than 300 points below the Michigan mean. Only 10% of the students admitted into Michigan have SAT scores below 1200, and almost all (if not 1005) of those fall under one of four possible categories:

1) Perfect 4.0 students who simply cannot test well. Even then, their SAT scores are still over 1100.

2) Super-athletes who will be starting on one of the main revenue sports (i.e., future NFL, NBA or NHL star).

3) Underrepresented minorities. Again, the SAT scores of URMs are usually well over the 1100 mark.

4) Exceptional in some way (world-class musician, published author, founder of a profitable company, Olympian, child of a head of state or fortune 100 CEO etc...)

So, unless you belong to one of the 4 groups above, I suggest you do your best to break the 26 on your ACT or 1800 on your SAT. If you don't, I really do not like your chances...especially next fall.

Thanks for ur advice. i am just a very bad CB test taker. i hate the SAT so much it is not even funny.
anyways, thanks and i think i am going to try the ACT this fall

It is just a test, Do not let it intimidate you. Good luck and keep us posted.

febrabbit, i have literally felt your pain when i was in ur situation now. My SAT score was like only 10 pts higher than ur 990 and UM was my dream school. But dont give up!! I took it 3 times and ended up with an 1180...and yea really try on the ACT. Don't think cause its a diff test that itll be easier and all of a sudden ur 1st score on it will save u (like i did, boy was i wrong) I ended up with a 23 the first time. But i took it again SERIOUSLY and with effort and rose it to a 28. Just put a lot of effort in and good luck man. Thankfully i was sweet in everything else lol so once i got my sat/act to "decent" 1180, 28...i was alright and got accepted

Thnaks umardarr, thanks for the encouragement! i think i am spending most of my summer to prepare for the ACT in Oct for my fall college admission. this will be my first and last time taking the ACT, so i hope i will get a score like u.
by the way good job and good luck at UM
maybe if i do well and maybe if, hopefully i will get accepted, i will see u there :>

yep, lookin forward to it

umadarr were u out of state

yes i was :) There is a UM rep who knew Toledo VERY WELL so she knew which schools were the "good" ones as you may call em. Since i went to a private jesuit school that is well known in Northwest Ohio, i think that also played a major factor in helping me get in
