What are my chances?

Hello everyone, first-time poster, long-time lurker here.

State: Ohio
GPA: Our school uses a different grading scale, but I would say 3.5-3.6?
Ethnicity: Asian (Filipino)
Gender: Female
Major: Undecided

SAT: 1180/1600, 1800/2400
CR: 640
M: 540
W: 620
ACT: 29

Very competitive private high school
2 APs: Bio, Art History
1 honors class (Spanish)

ECs: Riflery for 3 years, Track for 3 years, Academic Challenge (Captain), Library volunteer for 2 years

Unsure about the essays.

Thank you in advance.

The fact that you’re from Ohio (as opposed to NJ/NY) may help, but your SATs and GPA would make UMD a reach for you, since you are OOS…As you probably know, UMD has a cap on the # of OOS students they take, since it is a public university. There are always exceptions, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for you. Make sure you have some safeties in your college options/applications as well.

I am with astro, if you were from NJ I would say NO, Ohio will help, but being Asian may hurt since it is an ORM at UMDCP. I would say spring admit, but like astro, I will keep my fingers crossed.

Everyone needs to realize none of us sit on the admit board, there might be something within your application that you think means nothing, but is actually your hook.

You will see people who we said “def in” and get a reject letter, and those that we say " it’s a reach" who get accepted. It is the whole application that they look at, and that includes your gpa, EC’s, essays, recs, the rigors of your course schedule, your school, and your State. All of that will be combined together to give a final answer.

Good luck

Actually, if you only send in your ACT score, I’d say you would have a reasonable shot. The 29 is much better than the 1150.

They actually will convert the ACT to an SAT score and take the better of the two for decision purposes.
