I'm a rising senior who has done a bit of catch up work since 9th grade. My GPA is so/so, 4.23 and I am 9th in a class of 430 or so. My SAT's are pretty bad- 770 verbal 710 writing and an abysmal 580 math ( there is a serious retake in my future). I have yet to take SAT II so we'll see what happens. My extra curriculars are very weak. I volunteered at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and for EDMARC (a company for terminally ill children). I also tutored 5 young children who were learning English as a second language. I was inducted in the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society (and am an active member in both clubs, as well as regular French club). I took 1 AP class in 10th grade, 3 in 11th, and am taking 7 in 12th. I'm fairly a straight A student ( some mild slip-ups in French- WHO NEEDS IT!? :) )

I'm looking at applying to colleges in the UVA/ William and Mary category, but can I get in anywhere better? Do I even have a chance at these schools? I just have NO idea. Please help!

Boy, you're all over the place. I don't think you have much of a chance at the top top top schools but you don't seem to be asking about those - but I think you have a chance at W&M and UVA, and the University of Richmond could be a good match. What about Furman, Elon, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt? You are a tough one to call.

Luckily for most students raising the SAT math score is a matter of practice and more practice. Seems like you are in the right niche with UVA and William & Mary. It would be helpful to know more of what you are interested in before suggesting other alternatives.

Do you really think I could get into Vanderbilt and schools of that type? I just want to go to the best school I could possibly get into, and I figured UVA and William and Mary were my only real choices. As for my interests...I'm mostly thinking of becoming a doctor. I'm not sure of a major, Biology is appealing but so common. THANK YOU FOR REPLYING! It's so nice to finally be getting answers from someone :)
