West Point is a serious dream of mine and is my first school choice. What are my chances of getting in at this point?

Please give me constructive criticism and tell me what else I can do to better improve my chances of getting into USMA.

PT,

You have a nice start. It’s good that you’re challenging yourself with the toughest courses even though you won’t have the advantage of a weighted gpa. For West Point, your class rank is really important. So, keep the grades up and make sure you are in the top 20% (top 10% is even better).

Once you get your test scores, consider taking it again. If you prep, you will improve.

If you earn a letter in one or more of your sports it will be helpful. You should also strive to show the leadership that could earn you a team captain role.

If your school has a National Honor Society chapter, make sure you do what you have to do be invited to join. If no chapter exists, speak to a faculty member who might be interested in being a sponsor and get it started. (this is easier said than done.)

Reach out to your MALO. Or find local college fairs where WP will be represented and get out to meet a rep.

Plan on applying for SLS in the summer of 2011. The application should be available sometime around 1/1/11. Make sure you request information from Admissions (on their website) so that you will be notified about the link. Additionally, you’ll receive info when there is a local Admissions briefing in your area.

Read about West Point and the Army. Reach out to current cadets (remember that on occasion they may be a bit cranky  when discussing their lives) to learn more.

Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress. This is a good place to ask questions.

Chances?
Junior
Lettered in three sports -football, wrestling and track. Elected (for Senior year) , team Captain for both Football and wrestling teams and President of The Student Council, selected for West Point SLS, CA Boys State selectee. ACT 29, Math 32, Reading 31 English 25, SATscores at about this same level

I forgot to mention. 4+ GPA and in top 10% class standing

Nick,

Keep up the good work. And enjoy SLS. Practice the CFA - especially the kneeling basketball throw - before going because it’s a free shot and can eliminate some of the pressure once senior year starts.

Keep us posted.
