what are my chances?

I'm a junior in high school right now, and I'm thinking about where I want to apply to...
What are my chances of getting into UNC Chapel Hill or Duke?

IB Program Diploma candidate
GPA = 4.0 (unweighted)
SAT 580 math, 640 reading, 680 writing so far (i know I need to improve math)
I'm taking the subject tests for Chemistry and US soon
Taking the ACT in April
Girl Scout Senior, got Silver and will have Gold Award by summer
Teen Volunteer at Moses Cone Hospital this summer
Active in serivce clubs (Invisible Children, Random Acts of Community Kindness), Science Olympiad Varsity Team 2 years, Sierra Club, Art Club
Applicant for National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society

I’d like to be a doctor and want to go to a school with a strong biology program. I’d rather go out of state (live in NC), but I might not able to afford that. I’m also considering Michigan State, Colorado State, and Davidson College. My dream is, of course, an Ivy: Stanford, Harvard, or Yale.

You should be fine for UNC, especially since you’re in-state. You really do need to bring up your SATs considering that you’re only scoring a 1900 right now, but I think Duke might be a mid-to-high reach depending on how your weighted GPA is. All the Ivies are high reaches. If you can bring your SATs up by a good quantity then Duke, at least, might be more within grasp. I really don’t know much about Michigan State, Colorado State, or Davidson.

[Please chance me- will chance back!](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/886683-please-chance-me-will-chance-back.html)

^Your weighted GPA really isn’t relevant, since weighting mechanisms vary by school. Course rigor does matter, however, but being in diploma should take care of that. Carolina loves IB kids, so you should be fine there.

For Duke and Davidson, you need to get your scores 2100+ at least, take the ACT and Subject Tests, and then ask for chances. Without the appropriate scores, chancing you is pretty much impossible. Without 2250+, I’d discount the Ivies (fellow CCers, don’t flame me; of course she can apply wherever she likes).

You may also want to bolster your ECs. This doesn’t mean join twelve thousand clubs, but focus on the strengths you have. Community service is central to your app–start a fundraiser, organize a big local walk, etc. Medal in SciOly if possible (did you the other week at regionals? Fellow NCer here, not a creeper!), and apply for Scholastic Art and Writing awards for your art.

thanks so much to both of you! I know my SAT scores aren’t as good as I know they could be–I didn’t study nearly as much as I should have! Thanks for the tip about the Scholastic Art and Writing awards; I’ll definitely look into that. As for Science Olympiad, my partner and I did ChemLab, and it was kind of a disaster–we were shoved in that even about 2 days before the competition. We also did Experimental Design, but I can’t remember the place.

Does anyone know, generally, how universities feel about IB? It’s sort of like a shot in the dark; the program at my school is brand new.

you def. need stronger ECS if you want a chance at the IVIEs
IB will take of Carolina
Duke - raise your SAT
Davidson - Raise SAT
ivies -are a shot in the dark for literally everyone but they are always worth a try.

i would def. try to do something EC that makes you stand out or really shows a strong passion…

bump!

hey there, congrats on the 4.0 gpa!
i would say you will for sure get into carolina, as you have a perfect gpa so far in the ib program-which they love to see. as everyone else has said, you definitely need to raise your sat score for duke and out of state colleges. your extra curriculars seem to be a good start; to improve them, go for some leadership positions or try medaling or placing in competitions of your strength. overall, great work and remember, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A WINNER IF YOU WORK HARD AND SMILE!
