So I currently attend the local community college. Despite getting into the schools I wanted to, I was pretty much forced to go to community college by my parents. I had a really bad first semester, due to lack of motivation, my boyfriend breaking up with me after I suffered a miscarriage and the stigma that community college is easy. I ended up with a 1.25 and was placed on academic probation. Initially, I wanted to drop the class I failed and the class that I was doing poorly in but not quite failing. By the time I got around to doing so, it was too late and my GPA suffered. This semester I am doing extremely well. I am receiving all A's and B's. I am retaking the two classes I mentioned above. At my school, when you retake a class, the grade gets replaced. My plan is to take 3 classes spread out during the Spring semester and Summer semester and then transfer to Central Michigan in the fall. However, I am panicking that last semester's grades will prevent me from getting in. So can someone tell me what my chances are? I desperately want to want to transfer, as I feel I am missing out on the college experience that the rest of my friends are having.

You have a compelling life story, which includes hardships. You’ve shown you are a survivor as you are working to improve your academics (you mentioned this semester you are doing much better). Be sure to describe your life events in your transfer personal statement…but be sure not to cast yourself as a victim and instead as someone who rises above and goes on with life. Talk with an advisor and also correspond with the college you are trying to transfer into. Ask them what they are looking for in transfer students. Lastly, be sure to write a good personal statement about why you wish to transfer and why you want to transfer to that college. Best of luck!
