So I really want to get in for poly sci and here are my stats

GPAS Unweighted:
Freshmen Year: 2.4
Sophmore Year: 3.0
Junior Year: 4.0+ (2APs)
Senior Year: (6 APs)

Final GPA: 3.3 (87.43)

SATs: CR: 630 M:610 (1240/1600)
SAT IIs: U.S. History 750
AP Scores: U.S. History: 5; English Language and Comp.: 4
URM: African American
Region: Out of State

ECs
Senator of Grade Council (10-12)
President and Member of FBLA (9-12)
It's Academic (11-12)
Physics Club (11-12)
Varsity Soccer (10-12)
GSA (11-12)
Olympic Development Soccer (11)
Club Soccer (9-12)
Internship at a Law Firm (11-12)

The upward trend will help. Being out of state will help as well; they really are eager to take OOS kids! I think a 1250 is the average for OOS kids, so you are not too far off the mark. Maybe try taking it again to try for 1300+.

TCNJ only considers the GPA your schools provides, ie they do not recalculate. What is your weighted GPA (or is the 87.43 your weighted GPA)? As of now it is too low for a chance at admission, even with your OOS status. The difficulty of your courseload will be what gets you in though, if you are accepted. I’m taking 6 APs senior year as well. Haha. Sucks. I think you have a decent shot, probably 50-50 or 40-60.

Yeah its 87.5 actually but yeah thats my weighted :(. Apparently all the work I put in this year canceled out my rough Freshman year. I hope they see that I had my most rigorous course load my Junior year and really worked hard. If it counts for anything I was top 5 in my class when you just count my Junior year :P

Being in the top 5 will definitely help. No, you did not do that well your freshman year but the important thing is that you worked hard and brought your grades up, and admissions will definitely take note of that. Your GPA is also decent so don’t be discouraged! Will it definitely get you accepted? No, but will it definitely keep you out? Absolutely not. At my high school an 87 was a B average and it was perfectly acceptable. Oh, and the fact that you are OOS and URM will help a lot. I say try to retake the SAT, do a good job on your essay, visit (if possible) and let the college know you are interested and you have just as good a shot as anyone else. Good luck!

I honestly believe you’ll get in. I got into the biology program with a lower GPA than you, so don’t let that make you think you won’t make it. Being an URM definitely doesn’t hurt, and being OOS.

""TCNJ only considers the GPA your schools provides, ie they do not recalculate. “”

Which is why our HS last year changed their grade policy from an A being a 92 to an A being a 90. Grade inflation is everywhere!

I would not mention some of your EC’s that you joined 11-12. That screams…“I joined them only to get into college”…to the admissions office.

I wish my high school had made a 90 an A. It was frustrating for people who got a 91 on an exam or paper and were told they were only as good as a B.

I would hold off on not putting the clubs you joined in 11th grade. Sometimes there are good reasons why someone joins a club “late.” If there had been a physics club at my high school no one would have joined until senior year because no one took physics until senior year. Also, there were some clubs that you could not join until you were of junior status. If you joined a club because you were genuinely interested and were a dedicated member then you should put it on your resume.

I think you have a great chance of getting in. Your SATs are good, but not too great. But I think if you write an excellent essay with good recommendations and extracurriculars, you will be accepted. Also, being African-American is a boost too.
