My daughter has not taken the SAT or ACT yet, but she is taking it this Spring/Fall. She has started prepping for it, but is not very strong in Math.
Her GPA of junior year for quarters 1 and 2 were a 3.73 and a 3.85. Her semester was 3.64.
She attends a private Catholic school and we are a Maryland residents.
She has been year-round club swimming since 6th grade, Varsity high school swimmer since freshman year, works as a lifeguard during the school year and summer, babysits, an Ambassador Student, and has 60 hours of service throughout her high school career so far. She will be applying for NHS this year, as well.
My daughter transferred from a different private school into sophomore year, so it delayed her coursework. Coming into junior year, she was put on a wait list for classes she should have been enrolled in due to space issues in the class. In the end the counselor could not place her in these classes. Although, it was told by the counselor she clearly had the grades to get in, but there was not enough space because it was first come to the already Honors/AP students. She wants her to take 2 Ap’s next year along with honors since she could not get that experience this year.
Thank you!!!
It’s hard to tell without her standardized tests scores. Also her GPA looks pretty good, is it unweighted or weighted? It’s really important that she takes pretty rigorous courses, so maybe add a couple of APs to her schedule next year. Her essay is also incredibly important, so if you get all of that down she should have a substantial chance of getting in! Good luck!
It is her weighted GPA I believe… She is working hard this new semester to try to get between a 3.8-4.0 quarterly. Hope it will be good enough! Do you think if all of this gets done, it would more likely be a chance for Fall or Spring admission?
It will depend tremendously on her ACT/SAT scores. Does she have a PSAT score for reference (although these can often not be a good indicator, but better than nothing)?
Looks like her extra curricular is fine, maybe get some more ssl hours over the summer. If that is her UNWEIGHTED gpa, which I think it is, then she should be fine as long as she gets about a 1250 Math and reading. If that’s her weighted, then that shows she is not the best student nor is she taking many honors/ap classes. Push her to do more than 2 APs next year. If the course load is heavier perhaps she can get away with a lower weighted gpa.
You should check to make sure of whether its her unweighted or weighted GPA. Maryland gives a lot of importance to a balance of challenging and not-so-challenging classes. If its her unweighted GPA, I recommend that she takes maybe one or two more APs her senior year. I think she’ll have a reasonable chance applying for fall admissions. Good luck!
I am not following your math. I am assuming the Q1 + Q2 = Semester. If so, how can her average from the two quarters be lower than either quarter alone?
For the semester her school does 40% of quarter 1 and 40% of quarter 2 and 20% of the midterm grade
