My husband is a USAF vet with 100% 9/11 GI bill eligibility and YR. He attends the School of General Studies at Columbia. His tuition and fees are covered for up to 12 hours a semester through YR and GI Bill. He’s also eligible for other grants and such - Columbia has worked with him to help him get Pell and SEOG, which allows him to take up to 14 credits I think. Plus he gets $500 for books per semester. If you’re interested in a top program that also has many non-traditional students, including many veterans, you may want to consider GS at Columbia. My husband seems to like it and feels well-supported here. (You would have to get your test scores up, though, as GS does ask for SAT or ACT scores from nontraditional students.)

In NYC the MHA is $3,200. My husband uses that to live on - he pays most of our rent (university-subsidized; we live in university-owned housing) with it and still has money for food and incidentals. You won’t get summer MHA though, unless you borrow money to pay the tuition over the summer. You can only get it if you are taking classes, but your YR and Gil Bill tuition benefit only cover 24 credits a year, which won’t extend to the summer. My husband solved this problem by getting a summer internship.

I would like to point out that NYU’s YR amount per student per year is $3,500. The GI Bill award is $18,077 per year, and that gives you a total of $21,577 for the year. But NYU-SCPS’s tuition is $25,264, so I would check with the office to make sure it covers everything. I also know that Columbia GS’s numbers are off on the YR website, too, but you still may want to check.
