What are my options???

Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm in need of some guidance. I applied to USC by the Dec. deadline as a freshman, yet I'm anticipating rejection. I have a 3.5 overall high school unweighted GPA, and a 3.5 CA community college GPA with 48 semester units so far. (61 by May). And I have two APs from sophomore year and numerous honors courses. Weighted GPA is fairly high, but I don't know exactly how high. Possibly 4.2ish? And I have a 29 Composite on the ACT, Essay 11. What else...SAT 2s: 610 and 640 (Literature and US History respectively). I'm an African American Female, and have two brothers who are at a CSU. Other than that my mom went to 4 year college in another country and my dad a 2 year college in Chicago.

So what I'm afraid of is that if I do get rejected for freshman admission, can I apply as a transfer next february? I would already have 60 semester units and completed all of the prereqs for my prospective major (Sociology). Which are Intro to Sociology (A), Statistics (A), Calculus I (B) plus I did the IGETC. Ughhhh....what can I do? Appeal if I get rejected? Apply for transfer admission next february....what are my other options?

If I can transfer, I suppose I need to take a year off instead of taking more and more college classes?

USC is my absolute #1 choice. I suppose I could settle for something else but it would make me bitter for a very long time. I will admit I am pessimistic but I want to be able to handle rejection if it comes by analyzing the worst case scenario

hey USCgirl89, I'm definately in the same situation as you.. i have a 3.6 unweighted GPA with 6 AP's, 12 Honors. SAT composition of 1900, essay 12. SAT II's: math 720 & chinese 780. Definately not feeling too confident about my application

Honestly, if I don't get in, I will probably just try my best and appeal. I'll stress the personal problems I went through in 10th grade which caused the downfall of my academic GPA, and a few awards I have won since I've submitted my application.

Maybe Spring semester would be an option for you?

I personally would guess that transfering as a college student is probably more difficult and competitive than applying as seniors from high school.

why did you apply for freshman stnding if you have already 48 units completed and soon will have 61... ? They won't consider you a freshman if you have taken that many units at the college level, and therefore your HS stats (including test scores) won't matter in the admission process.

If you get rejected, you'll get rejected as a transfer student and you could always appeal (though not sure what good this usually does). I doubt you could reapply next year (take a year off just to attend USC?)... hopefully you wrote some good essays on your app. and you won't get rejected. One thing I do think I'm 100% right on though is your college standing, you won't be considered a freshman with that many units at a CC.

Best of luck!

well i'm 17 years old right now (turning 18 in december...) so i wouldn't mind taking a year off to work and save money. i'm a high school student and don't graduate until june so that's why i'm applying as a freshman. i've been taking college classes since the beginning of junior year

Sorry for being so blunt, but you're "100% wrong" :)

Only college courses taken after high school graduation count towards the freshman/transfer distinction. So her application was correct, applying as a freshman - if she's accepted, she'll be given sophomore standing, and hopefully would be able to begin upper division (junior) coursework immediately if they will waive off prerequisites if she's already done them.

Well obviously the thing to hope for is admission, then the whole appeal/transfer/etc thing is moot. Worst-case scenario, you probably have a good chance for transfer next year, if you can maintain or improve a 3.5 gpa.

yeah but i don't think there are anymore classes i can take. I already completed the IGETC, the rest of the GEs I have to complete at USC. and I already finished my major requirements. can I take the fall semester off and apply to transfer in january?

You couldn't apply for transfer for the spring, they only accept applications for fall.

However, I think you have a really effective argument. If you're rejected (which I guess is always possible, but I don't think it's nearly as likely as you think) you can try to appeal to them with that (i.e., that they should consider that you would be well qualified if you were a transfer student).

Good luck!

Do you think you may be selling yourself a little short here? You've been taking college courses since junior year and have a 3.5 gpa in that coursework plus an unweighted 3.5 with AP work in high school... You are URM with a 29 on the ACT. I don't think your application is all doom and gloom. If the rest of your application is strong, I think you have a very decent shot. Think good thoughts!

Whatever you do, DO NOT take a college course in the summer after you graduate. That will in fact make you a transfer student.

yeah, i have confidence in what I've been doing and I know that I'm not doomed when it comes to admission. I just want to keep in mind that it's not 100% and well, **** happens

what exactly is the repeal process like for usc?

repeal...or appeal?

I think s/he meant appeal...

yeah whatever

"Sorry for being so blunt, but you're "100% wrong"

Sorry, but I don't see my "mistake". I said she wouldn't be considered for freshman standing, and you just said that yourself...

"she'll be given sohomore standing, and hopefully would be able to begin upper division (junior) coursework immediately.."

I don't see how I'm 100% wrong, mind elaborating ?...

you said in your earlier post that she should apply as a transfer student. that's wrong. that's different then what the other poster was saying....she's supposed to apply as a FRESHMAN and get a higher standing because of the college credits completed before high school graduation. You're not 100% wrong, albeit still wrong. Does 90% make you feel better?

If you have 0 college units completed after completing high school graduation (either because you are just graduating or took time off), then you're considered a freshman applicant. Period, end of sentence, end of paragraph.

Then, after you're admitted, you get a transfer credit report where you are given class status consummate with how many units you've completed. Until that point, you're a freshman applicant, no matter how many units you have.

Sorry if the "100% wrong" bit was unnecessarily mean. I was trying to be humorous, in my own socially-lacking engineer way :)
