Hello!

I am a freshman studying Computer Engineering at Villanova University. I am looking to apply as a transfer next year to schools that is academically superior. Here are my stats:

Fall GPA - 3.67
Spring GPA (Projected) - 3.79
Overall GPA - 3.72
Technical GPA - 4.00

UW HS GPA - 3.50
ACT - 27

I am Hispanic, so hopefully that will help my chances at any school I apply to. I am thinking about UPenn as my reach, but can't think of any other school.

Can anyone help give me other schools to transfer to? Keep in mind that I live in NJ and am looking for schools that are within a 100 mile radius. And also I want schools that are superior (or equal) to Villanova.

Thanks again!

What’s wrong with your current school?
You have a 3.67 and want to transfer somewhere “academically superior” (which I assume means more competitive)? This would make sense if you were clearly under-challenged at your current school, but that isn’t reflected in your GPA. Your GPA isn’t bad, but it doesn’t reflect someone who is milking the college for all it’s worth.

What is it that you’ll have to show a “superior” school, besides the race card and a 3.67?
Are there specific courses or areas of research at other schools that you’re interested in that aren’t offered at your present school, and have you studied independently in those areas? Keep in mind transfer admissions are way more competitive than freshman admissions (at least at most schools) and they’ll need to see that you have a good reason for wanting to transfer.

^ Like I said above, I have an engineering GPA of 4.00, if that helps. I’ve gotten A’s in all engineering-related courses. I’ve only gotten two B’s, and those were in writing courses (not my best skill).

This semester I have a chance to get a 3.9, but we’ll have to see how things go.

I live Nova, it’s just I want to be in an environment that is more focused on academics.

Any suggestions?

When you hit those upper-level engineering classes, you will be surrounded by people who are focused on academics, because those are the ones who will have survived the filter classes. And this will be true of upper-level engineering courses anywhere on the planet.

How much aid do you need? Most aid for transfers is lousy. Penn, staying where you are, or a state U in NJ may be your only realistic options.

^ Thanks for the help! I need a good amount of aid. I heard Penn (and the other Ivies) is very with aid, which is why I really want to go there.

I was hoping there were others that would be able to help me out in the event that I get accepted.

You could try Rice if you’re willing to travel that far. They’re transfer-friendly, have an awesome engineering reputation, and meet 100% of demonstrated financial need.

^ I would, but my parents would kill me haha. For now, I am narrowing it down to schools in the Northeast.

I checked. It’s about 4 1/2 hours from me. That’s probably about the farthest I am willing to go.

Thanks by the way!

Villanova is a great school. Being from NJ I could suggest Rutgers? But seriously Rutgers vs Villanova…

Computer engineering is an ardous major. The rule of thumb with STEM majors is that so long as you succeed in college it doesn’t matter what the college is.

As a freshman you have the time to raise your GPA close to a 4.0. Stay in Villanova.

Or try NYU. It’s close to NJ.
