I have recently finished undergrad and have a job in insurance accounting. I’ve worked here for several months and do not like it. It’s repetitive and boring work, and I feel like I should be doing something that has more of an impact on people’s lives. I’ve thought about cost accounting or working in banking. I’m attending graduate school in the spring for CPA but may change my major all together. I’ve been thinking engineering or architecture. But I’ve heard you can go into other business fields with an accounting degree. I’m considering an MBA in energy management or finance. And suggestions?
When you say “makes a difference” what do you mean?
You can definitely go into finance or management from an accounting background.
Cost accounting would be worse than what you’re doing now I feel like. Just my cost accounting class put me to sleep. Couldn’t imagine doing it as a job haha.
You can transition to finance or management from accounting. Just explore your options!
Engineering and architecture would require another 3 or 4 years of school unless you took some such courses as na undergrad.
The CPA designation has value and can be used to enter banking and many other industries. Maybe take a look at a company’s treasury or financial planning department, to get away from the repetition.
If you can get a job at an accounting firm doing audit work, you’ll get to see a lot of companies and different kinds of functions within those companies.
It’d likely take you +3 years just to get a BS in engineering or archteciure unless you took Calc 1, 2, 3, diffy q, Gen Chem, Calc based physics 1 and 2. Those classes alone would take over a year to complete but I’m guessing if you’re an accounting major you might have completed calc 1 and 2 maybe. But my point is unless you’re ready to start college over you problem won’t be able to do engineering
