What are people at UNC like?

I'm applying to UNC, Clemson, and Arizona State. UNC is kind of the ideal school for everyone here in North Carolina. But lately I've been hearing lots of negative things.

Is UNC really just full of nerds? How attractive is the overall student body? And is it really possible to find a relationship as a girl on a campus with such a high ratio of girls to guys?

UNC is a large state university. Large state schools have about as much diversity as you can find anywhere…so finding your niche and your group will take a bit of effort and time, but can be done. There is no such thing as a typical UNC student, other than they all tend to be very smart. The university spends a lot of time spreading the admissions tickets around the state to all the counties and high schools. You have nerds, intellectuals, party boys, party girls, athletes, all shapes and sizes, all races and religions. The rub I have on it is that you may feel its a bit like high school…and some kids actually complain its not as hard as their high school if they went to an uber competitive school. The dorms are loud and noisy and messy. Classes are large in intro level courses and some upper classmen complain they have had a difficult time getting into the classes they want or need for graduation causing major “traffic jams” in registration. Most UNC students love it there.

But if you want something smaller and more close knit, then a large state school may not be for you. Clemson is smaller than UNC.

You have to spend time on campus during the school year and talk to students and see if you get the right vibe or not. While not huge differences in many state universities there are subtle differences you might pick up on.

Students at NCState often complain that Chapel Hill students are a bit snobbish about their school. You will have to decide for yourself.

Arizona State is a very large state university with a reputation as a big party school. Very large classes.

I dont know what you are looking for in a school nor your stats and scores so its hard to really tell you what to do.

Pick schools that fit your personality and academic rigor and any other factor you deem to be important for your happiness and SUCCESS.

I’m a student at Clemson. let me know if you have any questions about anything?

-Pierre

17,000 people - some nerds, some not. Some attractive, some not. Relationship as a girl - sure, probably. Negative stuff? Any any given point in time, some of the 17,000 are unhappy about something; most aren’t.

I have a 2050, or 1380 SAT and a 3.7 unweighted GPA. I’m a nerd too, obviously, but I’m really well-rounded. People at my high school just are that way. I’m not a HUGE partier, but I do like to have fun on the weekends. I just wonder where that puts me.

No, UNC is not full of nerds. There are nerds, sure, but there are nerds everywhere. Most students at UNC are just normal people who like to have fun whenever possible. UNC is a huge sports school so I’d say jocks outnumber nerds by a pretty substantial number.
