we’re going to agree to disagree on this one. we don’t see eye to eye, i respect your opinion, but to each their own. sorry for the argument

“thealbatross, of course Alexander’s rankings are similiar to those you posted, they are both for Graduate school and not for undergraduate and we are current talking about undergraduate students”

JohnAdams, when each and every graduate department at a university is elite, the undergraduate program at that university will likely be excellent. That can certainly be said of Cal and Michigan.

“thealbatross, my son is one of those nonexistent students - class rank #1 with a weighted GPA of 4.73 (4.0 uw), National AP Scholar (13 AP tests, eleven 5’s and two 4’s), nationally ranked athlete, 4 year letterman, 2 time co-captain with too many athletic awards to list, CSF, NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, 34 ACT, 2 SAT subject tests over 750 (770, 780), etc. etc. etc. I assure you he does exist and there are many more like him. Oh, he is going to Cal in the fall…”

I missed the part where he was,“a world class musician.”

the albatross: While I agree with some of the things you’ve written, I must say I am a bit concerned about two disparaging references you made about gays. I hope as you matriculate at Michigan that your views and words become a bit more measured and thoughtful.

thealbatross, don’t worry about it

you are in a very exciting time of your life about to enter a great university

enjoy it

do me a favor, though - at some point make an attempt to take a trip to the NYC area and attend the “Houseparties” weekend at the Princeton Eating Clubs, particularly The Tiger Inn and The University Cottage Club. I think that you will get another view of what the well-rounded Ivy League student is like on Weekends.

Agreed. It doesn’t need a genius…

Perhaps you should care about such things, if you are portraying yourself as a proud member of a particular school. In fact, I think you just offered a tangible example of the wide diversity of students that Michigan attracts, from students who exude class and refinement to others who believe that all their crass “bon mots” are as funny as appropriate. And, fwiw, you also offered a vivid example of how students who share many attributes with you present themselves, analyze things, and what the focus of their life is.

I hope Michigan will not only offer you all the fun you seek, but also help you become a person with a “good education,” and this in all senses of the term. You might consider asking Alexandre to explain this part to you.

rjkofnovi, I was responding to the fact that thealbatross said “I’m talking about people that actually exist. Not people that you make up to try and dispute my point when these kinds of people clearly don’t exist. I could see a perfect GPA/SAT as well as a world class musician, but anything else other than that is unrealistic.”

You didn’t miss the part where he was a world class musician. He isn’t one and that was the point.

^^^^Yes I see now. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

No biggie. :-)

I’m surprised the Colorado School of Mines hasn’t showed up here…I consider it a top notch public school. Even better than Cal imo!

^^^Certainly way better than Duke for engineering imo!

 Oh of course. Which is why MIT accepted me from oh 3rd tier Duke University :p

MIT accepts students from many schools. Some are even better than Duke.

Um…sure? I thought we were joking around.
I don’t see your point anymore…

EDIT: Oh wait. Oh dear. So from what I can gather from observing your post history in a matter of seconds: You’ve gotten into multiple arguments over other Duke CCers and you-er-seem to hate Duke for some reason. You believe its not where its supposed to be?
I also see you’re from UMich. Interesting university. But I assure you, I’m not interested in promoting the “Duke greatness” like other CCers you may have encountered. I intend to help people, give facts, and indulge on my opinions. I am open to other opinions too, if they aren’t as ridiculous as the Duke bashing I’ve seen you do in some posts. :p

theSaiyan, the only reason why rjk has made comments about Dook is because the dook crazies have attacked not only Michigan, but UC Berkeley, UChicago, Northwestern, Cornell, Darmouth, Columbia, Penn and even HYPSM.

Congratulations on the MIT stuff. What department?

rjkofnovi–some are even WORSE than Duke would have been funnier.

ha!

It seems that have have another crazed dookie in our midst:

To JohnAdams12: Ah, I see. Hmm, that might explain why I seem to be getting the anti-Duke vibe in much of these threads. And here I was thinking the Lacrosse scandal might have still been in effect. For instance, in 2006, Duke was among the Princeton Review’s top 10 Dream colleges among students and parents.
Now its not on the list anymore
But due to the enormous applications it received (being the 10th most selective university in America), I thought otherwise…

Anyways, I’m sorry you felt that way JohnAdams12 and co. And thanks for the congrats. I majored in biomedical engineering bachelors at Duke and switched to mechanical engineering masters at MIT.

@JohnAdams: Sorry I wasn’t clear. But I felt you were being VERY elitist in that thread. I’m sorry, but I think I have the rights to compare Duke to MIT seeing that I’ve attended both institutions.
I can guarantee you I’ve met professors and students who are much brighter than some MIT profs and students I’ve met. I’ve also met MIT students much more talented than some Duke ones.

When a student gets into both MIT and Duke, I think its irresponsible to tell him to go to MIT hands down. This place isn’t for most people. Fit is more important. You can’t go wrong with both choices. I insist on applying the same reasoning for Princeton vs Dartmouth or Cornell vs Harvard.
Normal people understand this.
Molliebatmit herself even considered Ohio State over MIT at one point in her life as I recall.
