What are schools that don't look at the SAT writing section?

I did well on math and verbal (720 and 730 respectively) but I only got a 630 on writing. Do only the top universities look at all three sections? Would it be worth it to retake the SAT just to improve the writing section?

No one looks at writing. MIT did a study a while ago and discovered that the new SAT essay portion was meaningless, so they deny any writing scores. 720 and 730 are scores which will get you into an Ivy (with good ec’s and other stuff) and you don’t have to worry about writing. DON’T pay another $40 to improve a section which proves nothing. Good luck!

Actually, many colleges look at/count the writing section-one school even weighs it more than the CR and math sections! (I will try to find/post the link with that info.) That being said, there is also a large number of colleges that don’t pay much attention the writing portion of the test (again, I will try to find/post that info.) Depending on the caliber of school to which you are applying, you may or may not want to retake. If you’re looking at HYP, etc., it might be worth your while to try your hand at the SAT again (or perhaps try the ACT). If, however, you are aiming a little “lower”, a retake might not be necessary.

Doesn’t hurt to retake, but writing is not that important for most schools.

Many schools don’t count writing but they do look at it. Your 630 is not that bad though.

I don’t think it’s worth it to retake it solely for the writing section, but a retake could still be very helpful (you might raise all 3 sections).

A UChicago rep told us they think it’s silly to have students write an essay in 25 minutes. (:

I know that Georgetown discounts the writing section.

Wake Forest doesn’t consider test scores period.

^ Yeah, Georgetown doesn’t consider the writing portions of the SAT or the ACT.

My D improved her writing score from a 660 to a 780 just by practicing the essay format and by using the tips that have been posted on CC for the essay. What was your essay score? Have you already taken the SAT more than once?

My essay score is 8, but I got a 33 on the ACT so would colleges weigh that more heavily than the SAT score? BTW im applying to Brown, WashU, Cornell, UChicago, Northwestern and some others

Why even send the SAT, then? Your ACT is definitely good enough to carry you at those schools.
