What are should I aim for to get into my desired colleges?

I'm currently a junior in high school, and I'm still not confident about my grades for getting into the colleges I want. I have taken AP World, but only got a 3 on the AP exam. Currently, I am taking AP Language and AP Computer Science. Next year, I'm planning on taking AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, Calculus AB, and AP Macro/Micro.

My current GPA is a 3.64 (weighted).
I just took my SAT and currently awaiting my scores to come back on Feb. 14.

I played tennis for the first half of Junior year, not for the school but in a class. I am currently learning Vietnamese outside of class every Friday afternoons, and I have taken my 3 years of Spanish but I'm pretty sure I forgot about it.

My colleges of choice are:

VA Tech
VCU
Penn State
George Mason
Florida Tech (Not sure about my financial managements yet)

What GPA and/or SAT should I aim for, and do the AP classes that I'm currently taking shows that I'm challenging myself?

Do you have any idea what your unweighted GPA is? Also do you know your class rank and have you taken any honors classes yet?

I have honor classes, my unweighted is probably around a 2.8-3.0, I don’t know for certain. Freshmen year I had A’s and A-'s, however Sophomore year I had low B’s and high C’s. Junior year I currently have straight B’s. My school doesn’t do class rank because they believe it’s unfair.

I have taken:
English 9 Honors
English 10 Honors
World History 1 Honors
US History Honors (Current)
Physics Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Algebra 1 Honors
Precalculus Honors (Current)

I would say:

VA Tech: 3.9 weighted GPA, 1700 SAT
VCU: 3.6 weighted GPA, 1500 SAT
Penn State: 4.0 weighted GPA, 1700 SAT (out-of-state, I assume)
George Mason: 3.8 weighted GPA, 1600 SAT
Florida Tech: 3.8 weighted GPA, 1600 SAT (out-of-state, I assume)

The GPA and SAT scores I listed are what I would expect to be on the LOW end of accepted students. Getting these scores doesn’t mean you’ll be admitted.

As for your AP courses, yes, they do show that you are challenging yourself. But you must do fairly well in them to make it count for something. You still have a semester or two to bring your grades up (or three semesters if you take a gap year); so, if you work hard, you could get into several of the listed schools. Good luck!

Would the SAT scores “outweigh” the GPA? For examples, right now I have a 3.64 GPA and let’s say it remains stagnant until the end of Senior year’s first semester, however I get a 2200 on the SAT. Would this balance out?

It would do so quite a bit. As far as I can tell, most public universities place emphasis on grades first, test scores second, extracurriculars third, and essays fourth.

With an SAT score noticeably above average for the university, they are likely to admit you as long as your GPA is at least in the ballpark of the 25th percentile. There’s never a guarantee; but If you can get a 2200, you have a great shot at the more competitive schools you’ve listed.

This entire grid assumes you’ll actually get 2200.

VA Tech: Aim for 3.9 weighted
VCU: Low match/safety
PSU: Aim for 4.0 weighted
GMU: Aim for 3.8 weighted
Florida Tech: Aim for 3.8 weighted
