I'm just now finishing out my freshmen year in engineering with what should be a decent GPA of around 3.6. I'm starting chemical engineering in the fall and will be going to school this summer. My hope is to get an engineering co-op next spring at the earliest if at all possible, and ill likely be going to my universities engineering job fair this October.

What i'm really interested in doing is to start building a skill set that can set me apart. My GPA is good but not outstanding and I have no work history. I'm sure computers are very vital in industry and I'm interested in how they fit into engineering. As a freshmen Ive only had a 1 credit hour MATLAB introductory course which was terrible. Ive always had an interest in the hardware side of computers but programming and software is something Ive never taken an interest too, but I'm definitely willing to learn and may even enjoy it. How important are things such as MATLAB and Excel in engineering? How about a programming language like Python? I know later in my curriculum I take entire courses on MATLAB so I feel it would not be a be bad idea to get a head start now.
