What Are Some First Generation Low-Income (FGLI) Summer Programs That Are Available In The Summer Of 2021?

Hi all, I am a sophomore and I am doing some research on summer programs that are being offered to the first generation low-income students. If you could help me list and explain some details and attach a link to learn more about specific summer programs, that would be much appreciated! Even if you only have 1 FGLI summer program in mind, please post it! Anything would help  Thank you in advance!

If you are looking for on campus programs, I think they will be difficult to find. Most precollege summer programs will be online this summer.

That’s okay! Are there any programs online that you know of that can help FGLI students? Thanks

I’m also a sophomore in HS too and have been researching FGLI programs as well. Some I’ve found is

  • LEDA Scholars (Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America is an all-expenses paid seven-week summer program at Princeton University for low-income students.) https://ledascholars.org/
  • USC Bovard Scholars (similar to LEDA, it’s for high achieving juniors in high school with financial need applying to selective universities and seeking admission counseling. https://bovardscholars.usc.edu/
  • Thrive Scholars (Same mission as LEDA and USC Bovard) https://www.thrivescholars.org/
  • QuestBridge (help low-income students get admission to the nation’s top universities for basically free) They have the College Prep Scholars (juniors) and National College Match (seniors) https://www.questbridge.org/
  • *Princeton Summer Journalism Program (free, innovative residential journalism and college prep institute for high achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds.) Check back junior year, completely free of cost
  • Summer programs | MIT Admissions and MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science (online program spans six months and includes a five-day conference at MIT. From June to December of their 12th grade year, students from across the country discuss research, receive admissions advice, attend webinars, and complete projects that they present at a Final Symposium in August.)
These are the ones I’ve found so far, but know these programs open up in your junior year since many are college prep/access related! Feel free to explore them all!

Thank you sooo much! I really appreciate your help! Good luck with your summer programs

The Thurgood Marshall / Fleischer Scholars programs might be of use to you. The programs are free (housing and meals included) but they I don’t think they cover transportation, so that will be up to you and your family.

This year, the three campuses are Fayetteville State University (NC), Texas Southern University (Houston), and Virginia State University.

There is also the Women’s Technology Program.

  • It is a free 4 week engineering and computer science program with MIT for girls.
  • It is open to female juniors interested in STEM (FGLI and underrepresented racial minority students are heavily encourages to apply)
