I have a 3.82 unweighted gpa with a 30 on the ACT. I will graduate with 7 AP Classes and am also on the varsity baseball and basketball team. I go to a college prepatory private high school. I want to major in business maybe specifically economics. What suggestions would you have a colleges to apply to that i would have a chance to get into? i don't care about big or small or location (preferably in the southeast or west). Any suggestions?

UC schools

Can’t advise you on where to apply, but if you can get that ACT up to 32 or 33 you will be able to go just about anywhere you want. Trust me, invest in the prep course and study like crazy. A score of 33+ will separate you from an enormous pack of bright kids with great grades and get you into highly selective schools, or significant scholarships at really good schools.

BTW, visit lots of schools and you will start to form preferences for big/small, suburban/rural/urban, etc.

Thank you Crobinpa. I know that i would like a medium to large size school and would prefer a urban type campus or a good college town. I think i will be able to get a 33. I also work at Cheatu Elon which is a 5 Star hotel. Will this help me in getting into college if i have worked there for 2 summers. I am also the Secretary of FBLA and Beta Club.

I would look at UC Berkeley, Northwestern, NYU, UIUC and Twin Cities. Some of those will be reaches, so getting your ACT up will be important

Great public B-Schools include Minnesota-Twin Cities, UMich, UNC Chapel Hill, Penn State and Virginia. These programs are still selective, but less so then the top private schools.

I’d also give you a chance at Washington St. Louis, Notre Dame, NYU, Northwestern, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, and if you want econ over undergrad business, UChicago is GREAT school (still very selective)

Also consider some smaller colleges. I hear Babson has an outstanding B-program, especially in entrepreneurship, and many other regional schools could fit your need depending on the type of financial aid you want etc.

Garrett, A big consideration for many people is the cost of college. Is that a concern for you? If it is, I think many people here can advise you on where and how you can get scholarships. If money is not a real issue, then that is another matter, and you can target a short list of schools that you really like. If you are looking for scholarships, then you need to apply to a larger number of schools who historically give scholarships to students with your profile.

As far as your summer employment and ECs goe, it is all part of the story that you tell about yourself through your resume and essays. Yes it helps, particularly if you show how it highlights positive aspects of your character and makes you unique and interesting. Also do not neglect charity and community service. It counts.

Thank You all so much for the suggestions. They are very helpful. I go to a College Prep. Private High School. It has a very strong rep. as being a demanding school. Does this come into consideration when colleges look at my application. To your question yes it does. I will be applying to UGA as a safety school because of the Hope so it would cost be almost nothing. I have over 100 hours of community service most of which is required from my school. Also how much impact do letters of recommendation hold? Thank you for all of your advice

Also, Fordham, Villanova, Boston University, GWU, Richmond, Washington. Best of luck!
