I wanted to apply to some good colleges with fine art and science because I’m really into the arts and would call myself a talented artist with some potential for a possible career in the art world, but I’m also pretty dedicated to biology as well. Last year (as a junior) I took AP Biology, loved it and aced the class all year round.
I love in NY, like 20 minutes away from NYC. My gpa is a 97.8. Sat score isn’t where it should be, at an 1800.
So far I have Syracuse, Temple, VCU, RIT, and Rutgers. I think I pretty much have a good chance of getting in with my portfolio with these schools, its the just the money I’m worried about. That’s why I also have some financially safe schools like CUNY Hunter and Purchase college.
Any thoughts on any other schools? And if you have any info about the aforementioned colleges, any helpful information will be appreciated!
NYU is an option. There are talent based scholarships for studio art–you would need to apply for that program and then add the second major in bio–so you never know what kind of financial aid you could get. The 1800 is on the low end for the art program, but probably not impossible. You would be admitted based 50% on your portfolio and 50% on academics. D is a senior and loves the program. A second major is do-able, easier if you curbing in AP credits to get out of some requirements.
uskoolfish, which program at NYU is your daughter in? Did she get substantial financial aid? I’m wondering because I know NYU is one of the most expensive colleges in the country
My daughter is a studio art major through Steinhardt. She did not get any financial aid because our EFC is too high. She would have been considered for talent merit aid (no need) if she applied RD, but she applied ED so forfeited that chance.
However, when you are applying for a portfolio/ audition program at NYU, there is a talent component that can get you more aid. It could bump up your total package if they really want you. In the end, that would depend on the strength of your portfolio, but it may be worth the application fee to see how it plays out.
