Okay, so I've finally decided. I'm going to change my name. If this TA I know is named Rigel, and JK Rowling has named Sirius and Bellatrix as characters, I want a new name, and I want to be named after a star.

But I'd like some good ideas for last names. Does anyone know?

But it would sound awkward for my last name to also be the name of a star. I'd like to think of something different. Does anyone know?

===

What about some good scientific names of plants or animals that could be used as last names? Or some good scientific words that could be used as names? What are some order names/genus names/species names that sound nice? (and don't sound TOO unusual?) Star names don't sound too unusual - which is why I'm picking them. This will be a long-lasting move though. A lot of stars have Arabic names, which sound really nice, but may make me more vulnerable to anti-Arab sentiment (which has a significant chance of rising in the future). But hardly any Arabs have names after stars.

One issue may be that a lot of scientific names end with "a", which may change people's perceptions of me. "a" at the end may sound cute, but may make ppl take me less seriously or something.

Haha some names I'm thinking of look more like lists than names.

Yes, they’re okay. They just tell me to still change myself, since there’s the very real risk that I could make the same mistakes as I did under my old name (and then lose the benefit of changing my name).

But I want a new name for a myriad of reasons (past mistakes are one reason, but there are plenty of others). Alternatively I could say that I made all my past mistakes for the lulz, but I guess when I’m older people won’t take to that very nicely.

==

Hmm.

Deneb Spixii

Or I could change a scientific name to something that sounds more Roman?

Deneb Spixius.

Or something.

Deneb Corvida.

Regulus Corvida.

Hm.

Things like “Deneb Centauri” would sound nicer, but might also give the impression that I don’t know my science. It would look so nice on an astrophysics research paper (but alternatively some people may object cuz Deneb isn’t even in Centaurus).

==

oh yeah, there’s this one girl who’s named “Nova”.

Well, if you are a guy and you are naming yourself after a STAR people might get some mixed messages about that. Not that that isn’t ok or anything…

Hahahahaha, I have a wonderful idea. If I changed my name to Curious Macaw or something and get published in a journal for avian behavior. Or changed my name to Itinerant Macaw or Transient Macaw. Hahahaha.

If you are not already in college, I would suggest changing your name to the name of the school you wish to attend, so when they see your app, they’ll be like oh ****, this kid’s for realz

Both names. Heh I wish my first name was Deneb. It might be easier just to change my first name, but I have other reasons for getting rid of my last name too, lol…

Regulus sounds male I think. Sirius is the name of a famous male Harry Potter character. Haha I wish I was a girl with a girly name though.

Haha Betelgeuse would be cool though it would make for a lot of awkward glances. It would be interesting once it goes supernova.
