What are some good looking ECs?

Are there any ECs that look especially good on a college application?

There’s no set ECs that will guarantee admission into any college or university. That said, I would suggest that you get involved in your own community and not just in the extra curriculars that your school offers (NHS, Academic Team, Debate, etc.). Think about how many students are involved in these who will be applying to top universities. Try to find some extra curricular where you could really branch out. I really focused on the violin and most of my ECs were related to that.

ECs that matter are the ones done by people who really aren’t trying to impress others (like you are) but rather those done by people who have found something worthy of their time and energy. For the few schools where ECs matter (and it’s only a few), these are the ones that catch people’s attention.

Most colleges don’t consider ECs whatsoever – despite what your HS stays.

The question about impressive ECs comes up regularly on the forum. There is a thread with several posts by Northstarmom, a Ivy alum interviewer, about what constitutes impressive ECs from the point of view of the most selective colleges. The post is at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/210497-those-ecs-weak-so-what-s-good.html

2 very interesting articles about ECs that stand out and how to get them (same author, different examples) are at [How to Be Impressive](The Art of Activity Innovation: How to Be Impressive Without an Impressive Amount of Work - Cal Newport) and [Save This Grind?](Case Study: How Could We Save This Ridiculously Overloaded Grind? - Cal Newport) While I don’t agree with everything in them, take a look at these 2 articles and I think you’ll get some original ideas.

I will look at those, thank you.

I’m currently making an online revision guide for students in my community www.acceleratedstudynotes.com, you might want to help out? :)
