what are some good minors for pre-meds?

Is Econmics a good one since it really interests me. Most pre-meds take spanish as a minor, I've no interest what so ever in learning that language. So would an Economics minor stand out in my application?

Knock yourself out. Med schools don't care about minors.

And nor do they care about double majors (as I've been told on this forum)

Where'd you get the idea that most premeds minor in spanish though?

I think he means in the state of California. In California, it's pretty much a standard to speak at least SOME spanish if you're a doctor, so taking an intro to spanish course or two is a big plus....

nah I don't live in carliforna. Do I have to learn some spanish, I mean English is already my second language. I know two other languages. I don't want to waste my time learning spanish.

at my school they tell us the only minor that can help is one that shows fluency in a second language...

definitely learn spanish if you want to apply to UCLA med

So a minor really means nothing at all for a pre-med student?

It's called "minor" for a reason.

I say go for spanish. Even though it won't look better, it'll help when working at a CA hospital. I have a friend that graduated from Stanford med who told me that during the first day of her residency, she had to learn spanish from one of her dads' friends just to have a basic level of communication with a lot of her patients. But, chances are, you'll land a residency out of state.

As suggested by everyone else, whatever floats your boat.

When taking spanish, how many courses of spanish should we take? Are schools looking for one or two courses or the FULL sequence of the language (i.e. like Spanish 1a thru Spanish 1d)?

Schools want enough so that you can converse with Hispanic patient in a clinic.

What about minoring in chem. I only need 1 more upper division chem chem to become a chem minor. Should I do it? If so, then I will most likely need to take it during the summer or winter of my senior yr. Is that bad?

Summer after? Yes. Winter? Nobody cares.

What about double majoring?

Med schools would like to see that you are sufficiently prepared for med school. That means taking the prereq's and that means getting a good GPA. They would also like to see that you have an enjoyable academic experience in college. Whether that means majoring in bio or double majoring in chem/philosophy or majoring in English with a minor in Spanish, it doesn't matter. They would like to see you do what YOU want academically.

They know that as long as you take a normal courseload with a good GPA, you will be fine for med school. They don't need to see you do a triple major of bio/chem/engineering to prove that.
