What are some great but lesser-known schools?

the masters school in dobbs ferry, ny
george school
hackley

Seconding The Masters School.

Look at the “Hidden Gems” thread. I also add Masters School to the list (great fencing).

In addition some schools that are actually well know but not getting a lot of “air time” this year include the following:
Millbrook
Tabor
Suffield
Emma Willard
The Hill School
NMH
Berkshire
Pomfret

Cheshire Academy!

Also check out St George’s…it’s not getting a lot of “chatter” this year, but their new Head of School is amazing.

Tabor has become very popular over the last couple of years.

Mercersburg Academy is outstanding. Also in Pennsylvania is Wyoming Seminary. Although only a third of the students board, it is an accomplished school in theatre & athletics. Academics are sound.

Millbrook has a beautiful location.

Berkshire is in a spectacular setting.

Millbrook has its own zoo and fabulous community service programs - plus each student gets to help with an animal. Not sure why it doesn’t get more “air time” on CC - but it’s a great program.

I am applying to Millbrook @Golfgr8 !

The Gunnery is another gem. We were particularly impressed with the faculty and the amount of time and attention they gave to DS when we visited, and we really enjoyed speaking with the Head at an admissions event It’s very small (~300) but they seem to have a lot going on on the campus with new construction and projects.

The Putney School in Putney, VT is great! I have a friend who transferred there from my high school and she loves it. It’s not traditional—apparently students don’t learn their GPA until junior year to reduce competitiveness, it’s super artsy and has a wonderful campus. While I’m more of a fan of traditional schools, Putney is a great school for those who really aren’t.

Regarding Suffield, I don’t think it’s a hidden gem anymore. My daughter has friends who were WL there. On their WL letter, the school said they 1k applications.

Orme, Dunn, Midland, Happy Valley are all great if you want a break from the snow
