awesome/bad teachers, boring/interesting material, easy/killer course loads, etc...which classes or professors do you recommend and which should be avoided?

Haha, whether or not a person likes a course depends on hir interests. e.g. I really loved microbiology, but I’m quite sure the majority of the student body would not. Anything in particular you’re concerned about?

My son will be majoring in Latin but doing premed studies. He hasn’t had chemistry since sophomore year (he did IB Biology for 2 years)- any suggestions for how he might prepare over the summer- would he be able to get a course syllabus from the department? Do most premeds take Bio during freshman or sophomore year?

^PsychoDad- Bio 1 (2960) is taken spring of the freshman year typically and Bio 2 (2970) fall of sophomore year. Gen Chem 1 (111a) is a pre-req for 2960.

Note: these are the only semesters in which specific classes are offered. Ie, 2960 is spring-only (and summer too, but that doesn’t really count).

What Johnson181 said about bio ^

Additionally, it’s fairly difficult to prepare for first semester chemistry. First semester gen chem is pretty much “Intro to quantum mechanics.” I hadn’t taken any chemistry since freshman year of high school, and I wasn’t any worse off than the average student in that class. Second semester chemistry is when traditional chemistry starts getting taught - by then your son should have a handle on what he needs to know.

PS: Latin? Wow, impressive. I certainly could not minor in that, never mind major. Best of luck to him

@PsychoDad
Fr Year 1st semester - Chem I (3 credits) and Chem I Lab (2 credits)
Fr year 2nd semester - Chem II (3 credits), Chem II Lab (2 credits) and Bio I & Lab (4 cedits)

I would also suggest MedPrep I (1 credit) and Calc (3 credits) first semester.
Your son will get scheduled for Writing I (3 credits) either first or second semester.
That totals 21 his 30 credits.

I wouldn’t recommend it but he could take a course this summer. I think incoming Fr should take a break in the summer. They will be glad they did in the middle of the first semester.

For summer classes do you stay on campus or off? Is it like some of those early start for public schools where a person can get like one course out of the way and get to move in early?

^Typically off-campus, subletting from someone for the summer, at least for my group of friends.

On campus housing for summer students end August 16th. You can’t move in to other housing until ~August 25th-ish or so. The people who choose to live on campus over the summer usually go home during that week rather than continuously stay in St Louis (or bunk with a friend. I’ve had people crash my apt for that purpose).

Also, the housing you live in for the summer is more than likely not what you’ll be living in for the year.
