What are some great "safety schools?"

My reaches/low match schools include: UChicago, Vandy, JHU, Emory, Northwestern, Wes, etc.

I barely have any safeties and its very possible I'll get rejected from all of my reaches. What are some good safety schools with respectable names, good academics, and not a horribly overwhelming workload where the students are still able to have some fun?

Thanks!
btw, yes, i know JHU is ridiculous in terms of workload. haha

Your state flagship is probably a good safety school, although it depends on where you live.

my state school is UCONN; its good, ya, but I need some others.

Depends upon what you want to study & what your stats & strengths are. Also are you considering any LACs or just nat’l universities?

Why are you applying to Chicago and Johns Hopkins if you don’t want a “horribly overwhelming workload?”

Anyway, based on an assumption that the schools you have listed are matches/reaches you might want to consider Syracuse, Northeastern, University of Rochester & Lehigh. Are you set on a university or would you consider a LAC?

hudsonvalley- I’ll put up with an excessive workload, but, like most students, I’d prefer to avoid it. That said, I’d love to attend U of C or JHU.

Yes, I’m definitely looking at LACs, as well. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for your input so far everyone!

Clearly your biggest reach is Northwestern as a 31 ACT places you at their 25th percentile of accepted students. Chicago, Emory, JHU, Vanderbilt & Wesleyan are also uncertain for you. For highly selective schools such as those on your list, you really need to write a compelling application addressing the issue of why you are a good match for that school. Consider Wake Forest University.

Wow! That’s definitely a “reachy” list!

There are lots of well-known LACS that might be good safeties for you. Here are a few more in the Northeast that are worth looking into:

Drew in NJ.
Gettysburg in PA.
Wheaton in MA.
Bennington in VT.

Happy hunting!

do uconn honors<<< sick program

You seem drawn to good-sized universities in or near a city. How about University of Pittsburgh? It’s affordable, and has rolling admissions (so you could know within 4-6 weeks whether you’re in), a very good honors program, generous merit aid, excellent facilities, and several very well-regarded departments. (I know the history and philosophy departments are highly ranked, for instance, from CC discussions last year.) It’s an appealing campus, with more green/trees than you’d expect from an urban school, has great sports, and is in a nice section of a neat city.

Holy Cross is a great safety because it is not that well known outside the northeast and it is SAT Optional. Oldest Catholic college in New England and ranked #35 on USNWR. Well respected academically and great grad school placement.

I second what frazzled said about UPittsburgh. Having been to the campus a lot during high school, it’s definitely a neat place to be and Pittsburgh has so much to do. Great school! Not too expensive out of state, even.
