You have to search "Child Labor Law" of your state to find information not only about occupations but also about hours allowed to work.

For example Texas Child labor law http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ui/lablaw/cllsum.html

Both permitted and prohibited occupations are listed.

New Jersey child Labor law http://www.state.nj.us/labor/lsse/lschild.html

If you are told in NJ that you cannot be hired at the grocery store show them the law and promise problems with the government for discrimination.
